How to cast priest spells or special abilities ?

I have version 1.1.4315

I noticed that I can't convince my characters to cast priest spells (Jaheira) or use special abilities (Ajantis). The mages sometimes cast their spells.

If I tell Ajantis to do 'Lay on hands' on a friend he moves to the target. Nothing more. None of his other special abilities work either.

If I tell Jaheira to entangle an enemy she does nothing. None of her other spells work either.

The buttons are not greyed out, animate and no charges are used up. Mage spells usually work when expected.

Am I missing something ? Is this a bug ?

Thanks in advance.

That version number is for Baldur's Gate without Tales of the Sword Coast.  It does sound like there's a bug, but one possibility to get round that might be to add TotSC to your game - you would probably like to see the extra content anyway.

I had installed Tales of the Sword Coast, but it didn't work. I also had installed GemRB and a wide screen mod that didn't work either.

I uninstallad Baldur's Gate, installed it again and after that Tales of the Sword Coast.

I now have version 1.3.5508.

I still can't convince Ajantis to perform Lay on hands nor Jaheira to cast priest spells in that adventure. In an earlier save, before I get Ajantis, Jaheira also refuses to cast priest spells.

However, testing in the Mission Pack reveals the characters there can perform special abilities or cast priest spells when expected. I also tried some saves from 2012 from a different adventure where I can convince Jaheira to cast priest spells.

I fear I have nothing better to do than start over again, or play another game.

I think the final TotSC update is 5512 - you can find it at http://www.sorcerers.../index_misc.php.

However, if you're still getting the same problem having reinstalled it sounds like you've got some sort of conflict with your hardware or other programmes and I doubt if updating TotSC would help with that.

Options you could try include:

1)  Using Tutu or BGT.  Both of these are very well established mods (far more stable and developed than GemRB) that allow BG1 to be played using the BG2 game engine - you will need to have BG2 installed on your computer if you want to use one of these mods.

2)  Buying the GOG version of the game.  That's been cleaned up for use on more modern computers than the original game release and should be less subject to the sort of potential conflict you appear to have.

3)  Buying BGEE.  Like Tutu and BGT that uses the BG2 game engine and it is also designed for modern computers.  It has some extra content compared to the original game and some graphical improvements, although opinion is divided about whether it's really an improvement over the modded forms of the original game available.

Install the latest patch. That should fix the problem. Like Grondo, i really, really recommend buying the GoG version of BG and BG:SoA. For 10 bucks you get a game that's fully patched, cleaned up and works like a charm on modern systems. And avoid GemRB.

Thank you for the information.

I installed the update and now have version 1.3.5512. When starting the game I got a black screen (presumably the TV and later the monitor being unable to display the image) and it took me about 20 minutes to get control back without restarting (probably due to CPU use being at 100%). Then the game worked, but the problems for that particular adventure persist.

It seems unlikely the other proposed solutions will solve the bugs in that adventure, meaning that I would probably have to restart anyway and I have grown tired of restarting Baldur's Gate.

In addition, there is the problem that the BG takes a whole core of an E6750 CPU (2667Mhz and 2 cores) on Windows 7. I use the other core for chess calculations. In practice that means that the game is slow, which is a minor nuisance. And of course, Alt+Tab doesn't work properly.(These problems may be solved with the suggestions.)

I have started playing Uru - Ages Beyond Myst. The absence of wide screen is the only technical problem.

Usually when solving problems like this you have to start a new game. I would just delete all your games started before the patch was installed.

As far as widescreen is concerned, there is a widescreen mod which will enable you to fill the screen with the game. To install it you have to have either Tutu or BGT installed. Some players prefer BGT, some Tutu. There are threads around to help you choose.

I don't know for certain, but here could be problems with the widescreen mod if you switch between different monitors. When you instal it you have to give your screen size and if this changes, I imagine problems could arise.

I don't know why Alt Tab doesn't work. It does on my PC.

A late response I know, but is party AI on and do these characters have a script assigned - from the description (attack target) it sounds like the spell command is being over-ruled by the script. I never use AI for this reason.

I also have a priest-type problem:  I made a paladin character but can't use turn undead.  The icon is just dark.  Am I supposed to be a certain level or something?

Paladins turn undead at 2 levels below priests - so you won't get any ability until level 3.
