While I couldn't say that this sort of thing is synonymous with anime, I'd say that this is the entire series in a nutshell. If you stripped away the quirky characters, comic relief and such from any of the games, you're not left with a whole lot except your basic ancient evil or mad villain.

The question should be whether this is a problem? For me at least, it really isn't a matter what story is about (main premise at least), it's HOW it's done. The devil lies in the details... like characters, lore or tone.

I doubt they'll move from open world anytime soon. I do hope that from ME:N they'll improve the balance.

Like any true denizen of the interwebz I am going to give you all my opinion without even glancing at the previous posts in this thread :wizard:

I thought DA:I was good, but not great. Regardless of that, the point I'm making for the purpose of this thread is that open-world is the flavour of the month right now in the games industry, especially in RPG land, and all single player open-world games have to balance story and open-worldness. DA:I had a good story, but certain open-world elements (pointless fetch quests) could have been done better.

Skyrim for example, incredible open-world, storyline is a bit meh. Skyrim is saved because the open-world element is so fantastic. The Witcher 3, from all of the reviews, looks like a game that has finally found that perfect balance.

All in all, I think that Bioware will find the right balance for DA eventually. Maybe they'll move away from open-world altogether? I trust Bioware to deliver.

The reason for everyone rushing to open world style games is about the era of the PS2 everyone basically abandoned them, in my personal opinion its because that is when fidelity became more important then gameplay.  Now with this generation of consoles they are able to start working the open world back into games, but its going to take a little bit of practice to find a good balance, but I think BioWare will find it for the zones I like had a great balance but they were the smaller zones of Inquisition and not the larger ones.

The funny thing is that only a few months ago he was fanboying hard for it.

What an epic 180!

Wow. I wouldn't have had the patience to come up with the goods the way you did.

Yeah, but that is normally the consensus around here after a BioWare release, for people were pretty hard on Origins after it was first released as well.  The only real notable exception was Dragon Age II.

I survived the DA 2 and ME 3 ending wars.  I know how these forums can get.

I'm sorry to say after Mass Effect 3 and now Dragon Age Inquisition, i will not purchase anymore Bioware games... I'm only one person but enough is enough for me.. can only take so many horrible games..

I understand its all opinion but that's mine.

Since I think its terrible I'm afraid for the future of the franchise

They only changed things because DA2 flopped (sadly, it was a good game but needed more time)

Anyone know any numbers? Will we be getting DA:I 2 at this rate? (pls no)

"Dragon Age: Inquisition had by far the most successful launch in BioWare's history, exceeding our expectations"

Quoted from the Bioware Q3 earning script published some time ago; http://files.shareho...ings_Script.pdf

I'd say the future of the franchise is pretty safe.

Who knows if TW3 is really succesfull Bioware might start copying from it like they did with Skyrim

Now that I wouldn't mind but since DA:I was basically a poor man's Skyrim I don't have much hopes

Calling DA:I a "poor man's Skyrim" does a disservice to both I think. DA:I is designed as an open-world game, as is Skyrim, but that doesn't mean anything was copied from it. Open-world is just a genre, it's not like Skyrim invented it.

Heh, I'd pick DAI over Skyrim anytime, And I enjoyed the latter.

They did say they studied/researched Skyrim Though. And I think its success at least partially affected Bioware's decision to move to open world games. The same likely happened for CDPR. You can't just ignore a game that sold so many copies, expecially comparse to how much RPGs usually sell.

The fact that Inquisition was developed to nextgen and oldgen could have held the game down on many fronts, particularly the way that the open areas felt and the lack of big meaningful side missions (like the one in Crestwood... Wish every zone had a main side quest like that) But what do i know....

Hopefully Mass Effect Next will show what bioware is capable of when focusing purely on nextgen. But i think its pretty much certain that DA4 will be a thing. And hopefully, without the excuse of having to cater to different generations of consoles, we will get a more polished and satisfying game. (mind you I loved Inquisition as it is, altho sure, there are a few things that could have been much better)

I would LOVE for DA4 to take inspiration from TW3, especially the dark and violent nature in comparision to the colorful/less gore image of DAI.

Yeah, and they had to do a lot of work bringing things over to Frostbite 3 and working out the kinks there.

Having every zone be like Crestwood in that regard would have helped, definitely. Some of the other zones click for me too -- the Fallow Mire, for example -- but on the whole I'm left wanting more.

When the topic of what zones did you like seem to come up I find there is a trend in seeing Crestwood, Fallow Mire, and Emprise du Lion to be near the top. Considering that BioWare does try to keep changing things and to see why some elements worked and others didn't I could see elements from those zones being more prevalent.

Huh. The Fallow Mire is the only zone I didn't enjoy. It's too small, the swamp is depressing and the endlessly spawning undead are tedious.

Crestwood and Emprise du Lion are my favourites, though, along with the Hissing Wastes and the Emerald Graves.

Fallow Mire managed to capture a good atmosphere for me especially since I was a bit underleveled and wary of stepping in the water because of it which added to it but I can see why it would be considered tedious.

I imagine that once I play Jaws of Hakkon, my ideal paradigm for BioWare zones will shift from Crestwood to the Frostback Basin. Everything I've heard has led me to believe that the DLC nailed what all the Inquisition zones should have been. Of course, there are those who are against the very idea of Inquisition's game structure, and that's fine. But I think it can work if they devote more time to less zones, fitting more story into each, if that makes sense.

In my opinion, "Jaws of Hakkon" were their attempt to improve upon what they had and I feel it shows; it feels like the zone is more condensed and alive in a way with the quests focused on some aspect of what is going on the basin so they tie in to the overall story of the area. The lore is wonderful!

What I hated was that on most maps, there was not even 1 mission/quest that was part of the main story. The maps simply existed for pure exploration and leveling.

JoH can add a lot to the lore and story, especially when done prior to the conclusion of the game. It also helps deepen the characters of the party; some well placed dialogue that references other events, personalities, etc. And the encounters are challenging, though I again hate spiders with a passion.

But I wished to add that the Hissing Wastes is a favored area. A beautiful evening set in the desert sands adorned with hidden treasures, dangers, and mystery. And a canine merchant that may also help protect the Inq from spiders.

Jaws of Hakkon really did improve of some of the complaints people made towards DAI for a DLC that was started after the game went gold

Couldn't you also judge a Venatori after doing quests there too?
