Thinking of starting another game and retrying the Arcane Warrior.

From what I remember it did this annoying thing where it would unsheathe their weapon to cast their spells, I know there's a mod fix around for this but I was curious as to whether this was intentionally done or was it a gameplay oversight?

Also curious if people recommend the Arcane Warrior, input appreciated. :)

Some spells can be cast with the weapon out. Arcane Bolt for one, also Crushing prison. There is a guide to what spells can be cast with weapon drawn over at the wiki. http://dragonage.wik...or_spellcastinghere is the link. You should probably go for those as the sheathe/unsheathe during combat can be abit frustrating.

I usually take fireball as a pull spell, the fire tree also gives flaming weapons which i feel is mandatory on flesh creatures. You should also get some dexterity to make up for your hit %, atleast i tend to do so. Paralyze is also very good, miasma as an aura is strong. There are many viable ways to play it, but i feel the tank approach is the best. Negate your enemies and lock them out of combat while your party picks them off. All in all arcane warrior is seriously strong. On nightmare with heal and a few auras you can just tank 5 mobs and its all good.

It's a good specialization to pick up, especially as it gives the mage the ability to equip any weapon and armor. You get the ability to equip armor runes in Awakening, so if no other reason, that's a good reason to pick it up with your mage.

Shimmering Shield-you'll need a very high mana regeneration to be able to pay the price to keep it up. Be aware of that if you plan to use the ability extensively.

Combat Magic-it starts with a 50% fatigue rating and goes up from there. Fatigue affects how many spells you can cast, so keep that in mind as well.

I favor an all magic build with Arcane Warrior, but that's me.

I tended to play the Arcane Warrior as an armoured a mage with melee weapons as backup.

One neat trick is to have spells that require you to be sheaved hot keyed your staff equipped and then have spells that don't require sheaving hot keyed with your weapons.

Also have the switch weapon icon hot keyed too.

So you switch between the two.

Interesting insights, thanks guys.

FYI, I normally like to try and be a healer as a mage so a Spirit Healer/Arcane Warrior would be my ideal build.

One thing to keep in mind with that is both Cleansing Aura and Shimmering Shield have similar mana regen penalties. I've got -10 for Cleansing Aura on my spreadsheet, and from memory Shimmering Shield is -10 as well. Unless you have a very high mana regen(20+), would not try and keep them both sustained at the the same time.

I'm not aware if the devs addressed the issue, but methinks it's an oversight. The reason for my thinking thus being that there hardly seems to be any pattern followed - some of the most useful spells can be cast with drawn weapons, while some relatively less effective spells require sheathing.

Regarding the Specialization itself, it's a pretty useful one just like the remaining three, as long as one is aware where in his/her gameplay style the effects of the specialization are going to fit in, and has planned accordingly.
