I have tried every possible way to beat the boss guy inside The Old Temple. I am playing on the lowest difficulty now and have logged over 70 hours of gameplay. For some stupid reason, the game will not let me exit this area to go out and level up my characters or visit a campsite!!!!! So now this game has become worthless until they patch that. Very poor decision to do this to those who play Dragon Age. FIX IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He's tough, but I beat him on Casual at level 22 myself. And you can't leave because it's a no going back sort of deal, and you are given time to prepare before telling Thane you are ready, but he's still a bit of a shock. Try taking out the mages first, also did you go to the room and have a mage make up the potions table?

Keep close to fires so you don't freeze. Use Mark of the Rift. If you have a Knight Enchanter with you use spirit sword. So long as you didn't go there before you were the right level there shouldn't be too much problem. I'm not the greatest fighter in the world but I still managed it on normal.
