So, I am surprised that this is not actually in the Dragon Age game now. The idea I am proposing will add more player interaction to hearing Companion history.
Fenris is a good example, when you ask him about his past, like when he was in the Ash Warriors' camp. A new quest loads up with Fenris as the leader(only one character, more characters if there are more in the back story). You have the player play-through the retelling of the history, humourous parts can be added like if you go exploring into a part of the island Fenris didn't explore he will go, "I didn't go here." Then if you keep trying to go there, it cuts back to the present and he yells at you!
I thought of this idea for telling of companion backgrounds when thinking of the story writing rule of, "show, don't tell." If companion history was done in a series of quests then that also expands on the World Lore without the need of a Codex. It also is more interesting then just sitting there and clicking dialogue options.
I hope more gameplay could be brought back to the player in future instalments of Inquisition and future Dragon Age games
.
I just mentioned Fenris because I was personally thinking of how a quest would go with his time in the Ash Warriors' camp up until Denarius takes him back and forces him to kill everyone.
EDIT: Dialogue choices for your Hero with the Companion can pop up at moments in the quest while you are running around as the companion in their history quest. You can have the two of them flirting over the top of the quest as well!
