Many people think that Anderfels is based on the Teutonic Order, but the Order is not associated with steppes and deserts, it was in the north of Europe. Yesterday I thought to turn over a map of the world and realized that the location of Anderfels such as Ukraine has in Europe.

P.S. Sorry for the poor knowledge of English.

People say the Teutonic Order because of its control of fairly large stretches of territory, which included parts of Poland. And for that matter, I would throw in a little Poland on the influences as well, as Poland was more or less the easternmost Catholic country in Europe, much like how the Anderfels are the northernmost country that follows the White Chantry.

My agreement goes with X Equestris, though that doesn't mean that I think TheDarkMax2 is wrong about Ukrainian cultural reference in fictional Anderfels.

As an example of when the Livonian Order of Teutonic Knights smashed right up against those of Ukraine - or the Novgorodian/Kievan Rus - I'll mention the famous Battle of the Ice in the 13th century, a turning point for the Rus toward Orthodox Christianity and away from the Church of Rome in the whole mess that was the Northern Crusades.  Though the Teutonic Knights were not the same thing culturally as Kievan Rus, they were highly associated while the Order lasted.

Most of the cities in the Anderfels - and even the country itself - have german names. Maybe some influence also came from there.

Yeah, perhaps some medieval Prussia is in there as well.

It's possible to be based on a real world county and not be a 100% clone of that country.

This, all of this.

Many players struggle to separate fictional societies from their inspiration(s) and, in many cases/complaints, imply they are supposed to be one-to-one representations of their inspirations rather than societies that are familiar enough to not feel alien yet unique enough to be different and plausible in that world.

Harsh, mountainous region, known for being host to a badass army but remaining politically neutral with the intent of preserving order for the world as a whole?

I always figured it was supposed to be the Thedas version of Switzerland (minus the whole ICRC thing, at least...I don't think the Gray Wardens have a diplomatic chapter).

The Anders' Army was an informal name used for the Polish armed forces throughout different periods of history, notably during WWII. Likewise the mythic military might of the Anders combined with their referenced lack of development and geographic and economic desolation would point to a Teutonic-by-way-of-old Prussian group of early medieval Polish Hussar knights. It's important to note as well that during the High Middle Ages Poland was a military superpower that slowly grew inactive after consolidation of Lithuania into Polish territory following a long period of intense and drawn out warfare; perhaps this is the basis of the neutrality of the Anders. This is all conjecture tho

Like others, I think it is based on the Teutonic Order, but three in-game factors apply to its strange geography:

  1. Two Blights have resulted in massive ecological damage.  Only a single plant grows in the Silent Plains.  In most of it, not even insects live, and so bodies do not rot.
  2. This Europe runs from north-to-south instead of east-to-west, with Greece at the Teutonic Order being near the equator and merging into jungle.
  3. The creators of this world loved to take history and make little, intentional changes.  For instance, the English channel is replaced with the Frostback Mountains - it's rock, not water, that makes a barrier between England and France.  It's like all their little changes to history (like how the English force the Norman invasion out in Thedas).

No, these bits of altered history are more like "What ifs" than "Let's just throw together everything about World War 2 most Americans know" :P

It's pretty clear that the devs knew their actual history, and were doing thought experiments about what would would happen if they made the odd change here or there.

Orlesian names sounds like French, but all these masks and lions - this is style of Venice.

I expect a Slav-German mix.

It could be that it's less copies of IRL and more that Thedas uses Europe as a template?
