It seems to be difficult to find a microphone setup that works with ME3MP. I have a Logitech webcam that works fine in Skype but hardly at all in ME3, a USB headset with a mic that works fine for Windows apps but not at all in ME3, and various other 3.5mm jack microphones that also don't seem to work properly with ME3.

So, a question for those of you on PC: what microphones (or webcam microphones) have you found to work with ME3 MP - if any?

(BTW, yes, I know about Skype and Teamspeak, but that's not the question I'm asking.)

I have a razer usb headset that works, though I never talk because the quality of voice chat in this game is abysmal (but YMMV, my hearing is not exactly normal range so idk, might be better than I think it is)

I use a SADES headset that has a 3.5mm plug as well. Been using it for 6 months and it's been quite good so far - audio and mic quality.

Thanks for the recommendation, TTT. When I play on my laptop, the built in microphone is crystal clear for anyone I'm talking to. So I know that some devices do work. On my desktop I've tried a lot of things unsuccessfully.

What I'd really like is to find a webcam with a mic that works well in game, because I tend to play with the sound piped through my amp.

The game sound and voice on Xbox is pretty good too, and one doesn't need to do anything special - this is one area where console has PC beat.

They seem pretty nice, but it looks like they are US only. I clicked on the British English link, thinking it might take me to a UK store, but instead it gave me the page in Afrikaans....

I've been using a Logitech 430 headset for something like half a year now and no complaints so far. Price is on the high end but well worth the money if you ask me.

I'm looking for a microphone only... no headset, no webcam... just a microphone. Can't stand headsets, prefer my surround sound system and I have no use for a webcam.

The best I found so far is the hands-free mic from my Kenwood car stereo (all I could save from my old car) and while that works fine on the desktop, ME3 refuses to acknowledge it at normal sound levels.

The automatic selection of the voice-input in ME3MP is not reliable. even after origin told me in the newest beta that my mic was now my usb headset mic, it was barely audible for my team. You have to select (and switch if you change) in the ME3 Options to.

btw, i use mostly my 5.1 speaker set and a simple 6€-PC mic from HAMA fixed at a piece of strong wire which i just set around my neck, and a Logitech USB Headset. The Output switches with the Windows-preset automatically, if i plug the headset in, but not the input.

I've got the sades, they're great for the money, sometimes me3 recognizes the mic and sometimes it doesn't. Try Amazon if you haven't already, I got mine there for like thirteen bucks.

Do Laptop mics work for ME3 or is an external mic required?

One of my friends use an alienware laptop and the built-in mic works fine.

I build something from some electronic trash I had lying around, works surprisingly well on desktop and ME3 seems to recognize it, too.

Now I just need to test it...

I play the game on two different PCs, one with a Turtle Beach PX22 (excellent), the other with a generic no-name headset (good). Both are on Win 7. Never had any issues, but a friend of mine experienced some trouble getting his voice chat to work properly after switching to Win 8 (low volume), and some tweaks in the OS voice amplification settings fixed that. Maybe it is not the hardware but someting in the OS or in-game settings.

I have a turtle beach PX22. It works on everything, Playstation, Xbox, PC. You can even plug your smart phone into it and listen to music or talk on the phone while playing/watching something

See post #4 where I said the mic in my laptop works perfectly with ME3.

I have a headset like that, but the mic doesn't work at all with ME3. It's fine with every other application.

Thanks for the L2Windows advice, guys, but there are very few audio settings in the game itself and very little in the way of Windows settings as well, I have one machine working fine with the built in mic, and the other I can't find one that works WITH ME3. As I said in the OP, I have several mics/headssets/stuff that work fine with other sound apps such as Skype.

Since I've got the matching sound-card, I figured I may as well go with the headset:

Maybe not the greatest cans ever but they're not bad - especially for the price.

How do u guys know how you sound in me3 mp ? :)

AFAIK, my genius cheap headset is working fine (2*3.5 mm jack)

Odd problems going on mark :)

Odd problems? Yeah...

... so I cobbled together a microphone which works fine even in ME3 (I think) but somehow my subwoofer is in overdrive now. I can feel biotic explosions now. My windows are shaking. This is so awesome...

...until my neighbours lynch me.

;)

Well, I ask people if they can hear me. If they don't answer, my mic probably isn't working. If they say they can hear me, I read them some of the poems from the Multiplayer Limericks thread. If they leave the lobby, then I know the mic is working perfectly ;)

I believe the issue has more to do with quality of sound capturing device than microphones.  I use to use the on-board sound to record. There was always some distortion or the volume wasn't high enough, or wouldn't capture at all.  The on-board sound card was having issues outputting and capturing audio at the same time, so I went out and bought a stand-alone sound card. (about $20 CAN)

Now I use my on-board sound for my microphone and stand-alone for audio output.  I haven't had any issues since.

I do get that, but as I said, all of my devices are fine with Skype and other audio capture software. It seems that ME3 is fussy about input devices (I know I'm not the only one who has problems with their mic in ME3) and so I'm curious to know what people have found to work.
