Ordinary RCA connector mics can also have some variation across hardware. For example, the Realtek audio stack handles RCA/phono devices before their signal is passed to the game audio layer. And the pickup sensitivity of condenser microphones varies greatly, while having no direct relation to the cost/quality of the mic. So I still think the simplest solution for many of us would be to use the same hardware that's known to work for others.

 

I'm also still interested to hear stories of fully functional USB devices, since it was my attempt to use my Logitech webcam that led me to start this thread.

 

This is one area where consoles blow PCs right out of the water. The $5 headset that comes included in the Xbox package works fine for voice chat literally out of the box.

 

Condenser mics generally require phantom power and they're meant to be used with an amp, I don't think many people connect them directly to a sound card. When I said "ordinary mics" I meant cheap PC mics that connect with a 3.5 mm jack.
