I was thinking, is there any situation where Shepard might think "A huge krogan would've been invaluable here"? Not gameplay-wise, but in-universe. Like that krogan reject opening a path on Grunt's recruitment mission (but after that mission, obviously).
Not really.
His value is that he loves to fight. And..... that's about it. 
Grunt is just one of the bigger examples of taking crazy-ass-warriors on a suicide mission. He's not needed/strongly wanted in anything else.
Him being so useful for Hold the Line of SM speaks to his utility.
Grunt makes a decent meatshield.
Just for grins, I took Grunt and Jack on most missions during my last ME2 playthrough. For no particular reason, except that those 2 were always jonesin' for some violence.
My friend adores, she ADORES Grunt, Jack, Mordin. That's all she needs so far. The later ones and DLC ones and Miranda/Jacob don't keep her interest.
