Why does Leliana speak Feralden with an Orlaision accent? The accent must be an affectation but what purpose does it serve?

She grew up in Orlais - as is obvious if you actually talk to her. In fact, she was born there.

Yes, she was born and grew up in Orlais but would have learned Ferelden from her Ferelden mother. She would have had no occasion to speak Ferelden with the Orlaisions and so pick up an accent. Her bard skills of blending in meant she was adept at affecting different accents. Her time in Lothering would have given her ample opportunity to acquire a local Feralden accent. The only reason to use an Orlaision accent would be to appear Orlaision, but why?

Too Stand out and be noticed?   What was it the Guardian said before the urn. She made up her "vision" so she would get attention in the cloister whether positive or negative because she likes it.  Speaking with a Orlesian accent in Ferelden gives her further attention.  I guess she likes to be the centre of attention.  

However she did grow up in Orlais and we dont know how many years that was. It would be quite easy for her to pick up the accent and for it to stick permanently. So that would rule my above paragraph out.  It depends how hypocritical of her you are.

Even in real life, accents aren't that easy to take away. I mean, she is old some 30 years, and spent at least 3/4 of her life in Orlais. Strictly speaking, we don't know how much time she spent in Lothering, but my guess is less then 1 year (if not, then her personal quest wouldn't make that much sense). Still, her accent isn't as strong as is Anora's maid or the other person in the Denerim Market District have much stronger "Orlesian" accents.

Also, on another note : Isolde is also Orlesian and speaks with her accent even though she passed some years in Ferelden. So my second guess is that even if they DO know the Fereldish accent, they still want to preserve their Orlaisian one. After all, Leliana speaks highly of her life in Orlais, from boots to... ehm... dresses and whatever else

yes..anyone can fake an accent...however that doesn't mean their true accent when speaking normally is the same..

But her 'mother' tounge was Ferelden, an english speaker who learns french doesn't suddenly start to speak english with a french accent.

I've met many people in real life who's parents still had their "native" accent while the children spoke perfect english..yes...when they were BORN OVER HERE.

Leliana was BORN in Orlais..REGARDLESS of her mothers native "tongue" (wtf is a tounge?) she has the accent of the place she lived and was born in (just like my example of poeple I know and have met speaking perfect english EVEN THOUGH THEIR PARENTS HAVE A HEAVY ACCENT)

Orlesian sounds like english with a french accent, that's orlesian not fereldan with Orlesian accent...

Only Olesian names seem to be in "pure french"... That's a choice they made since the world is 100% constructed for the purpose of being a base for this game... So it works ingame= most important...



So get the facts straight, she speaks ORLESIAN, not Fereldan with Orlesian accent...

My argument is that her true accent is native Ferelden learned from her mother. I don't see her as only learning Orlesion as a child and then lerning Feralden much later. The Orlesians would not have spoken Ferelden among themselves (the conquerors do not bother to learn the language of the conquered) so she would only have spoken Ferelden with native speakers.

No, they have their own languages.  Loghain listens in on Orlesians in Stolen Thone, but he can't understand them because they are going on in their language.  Dalish obviously have their own language, and I believe Dwarves do as well, or at least their own script.  I guess "King's Tongue" is Thedas' English, where everyone learns it.

Accents arent as easy as you seem to think to cast off.  Sure she could probably fake an accent, but why?  Why should she go through the effort?  There is no real point unless shes needing to pose as a Ferelden, but in general travel there is no need.  Basically she doesnt change accent for the same reason French, Spanish, Southern US, Asians, and every other nationality/regionality (I dont care if this isnt even a word) doesn't get rid of thiers.

She was born and raised in Orlais...REGARDLESS of her mothers accent/native tongue..she speaks with the accent of where she was raised, Orlais..MUCH LIKE..real life..y'know..that nifty place we all (well at least us..maybe not you it seems) live...I know several people of varying nationalities who have parents that still have a heavy spanish, oriental, polish accents...but the children speak perfect english with the same accent I have..EVEN THOUGH THE PARENTS SPEAK WITH A HEAVY ACCENT..



Leliana's mothers accent has no barring on it...much like...real life..

I believe there's a different "latin" text used in this game that originated from the Tevinter imperium. It's not Fereldan or Orlesian.

1) People generally learn accents from the society they are surrounded by, not their parents. I have British neighbors, but their daughter, having lived here in the US all her life speaks English with an American accent, not a British one. Likewise Leliana, growing up in Orlais, she would have learned to speak with an Orlesian accent.

2) Her mother died when she was very young, and so she probably didn't learn much language from her anyway. She was raised by an Orlesian woman (Lady Cecile I think?) So your point about her mother being Ferelden is moot to begin with.

You are missing the point. The examples you give are people with foreign parents living among english speakers who therefore speak english with a local accent not the accent of there parents. I doubt, however, that they speak the language of there parents with an english accent.

Why do people care if it's Ferelden or Orlesian? I don't. I love her accent and would be disappointed if someone decided to change it.

At a certain age it becomes much harder to learn a new language/adopt a new accent. I bet that even if I moved to a different part of Sweden I would probably never fully pick up the new accent no matter how hard I tried. I will be 31 on Friday. So if Leliana is 30, as someone claims but I disagree with (she doesn't look like 30), then theoretically it would be difficult for her to adapt.
