Morrigan restored one in the Last Court.
Well, that one wasn't corrupted either IIRC, so my point still stands, and she had had trainning at that point (I also question just how much of Last Court is solid lore, and how much of it is "Meh").

Honestly, if we had to list all the companions from the series by intelligence, Morrigan would be at the top. That said, it is clear that Merrill had the more challenging endeavour and she achieved a great feat alone and without the resources Morrigan had.
Merrill had to attempt to restore a corrupted Eluvian, Morrigan only had to reactivate a dormant one. It isn't exactly comparable. With that being said, Morrigan IS much more knowledgable about the subject matter, and knew what she was doing. Merrill on the other hand was pretty much stumbling around in the dark.
Well, yes obviously.
But Merril shouldn't be ashamed. Morrigan is just that much more intelligent and competent than most people.
They absolutely do.
Nope. I've done a dozen playthroughs, Hawke never says a single sodding word before a battle. It's always just wordlessly taking out their weapons and going into battle stance. I just did a playthrough not a few days ago, so these aren't foggy memories either. Show me a video or something of Hawke actually making pre-battle lines or something to prove me otherwise, because right now I know for a fact you're wrong. Either that or my copy has had a glitch from the very beginning that doesn't make Hawke say anything (other party members are constantly saying stuff in battle unlike Hawke), in which case I still need a video to know my copy is wrong.
Oh f*ck me.

Confirmed by a Bioware poster that it's a glitch with the PS3 version, which I of course own. So all these playthroughs, and Hawke is supposed to be speaking as much as everyone else and even based on their personality, and I've never heard any of it? Makes me damn mad. Oh well, I guess I kinda like stoic-battle Hawke... Key word "kinda".
Why was it never fixed if they knew about it!?

Nope.
Agressive Hawke is the best Hawke, really enjoyed being able to side with Petrice.Yup.http://dragonage.wik.../Hawke/Dialogue
This convenient list even has the line I mentioned.

Eww. My aggressive Hawke was much more wanting to stab both her and her Templar jackass right in their damn faces. Shame he only got the chance with one of them. Nobody manipulates him and lives.
Aggressive Hawke always seemed kind of like a sourpuss to me. For some reason I most remember him yelling needlessly "SPEAK SENSE MAN!" to the Dockworker when he was looking for cargo.
The dockworker was being a unhelpful prig
Are you sure we're talking about the same dockworker? Because the one I was talking about was saying what he always says doing his job He immediately leaves and is replaced by the guy who tries to bribe you.

She was doing the Maker's work trying to get rid of the heretical oxmen, my Hawke helped her with pleasure.
No, she was being an @sshole killing innocent people. And screw the maker, he either doesn't exist or he does exist but he doesn't give one flying crap about his creations. The chantry religion is garbage.

The devs said she cleansed the shard of the taint, studied as much lore as she could and extrapolated knowledge from the shard and was building one from scratch,
Doesn't change the fact that she was stumbling around in the dark.
That's the Harbor master, not a dockworker.
And he was also in the pockets of Raiders by the way.
That's not really relevant to that particular interaction. He's in the middle of doing his job and Hawke just yells at him for not immediately understanding what Hawke wanted before even saying anything. Although yeah now I remember it was the Harbor Master that I was talking about.

OK my point is about when Hawke talks to the harbor master. I misremembered who he says this to. Harbor Master asks for a Shipping Manifest and Hawke, not understanding what he means, immediately yells at him for no reason.

Regarding the actual topic, I do think Morrigan is more intelligent and competent than Merril, (although clearly not as much as she would like us to think), but the main reason Morrigan was more successful I think is because A ) Flemeth and B ) She had the resources of the Empress of Orlais' court. Merrill had the resources of a shack in an alienage.

I remember Morrigan saying that she paid a price in regards to getting access to the Crossroads so maybe she used Blood Magic and made deals with Demons/Spirits?
