Is Morrigan just that much more competent and intelligent than Merrill?

And still ends up with a working eluvian. She just lacked the knowledge to activate it.

Essentially, we last see her after years of work at the point Morrigan started at.

Without more information on how Merrill has been doing, it is safe to say that Morrigan is far ahead of Merrill when it comes to eluvians now. But I'm leaving the caveat that we don't know how far Merrill has progressed since the end of DA2.

We don't know wether or not it worked. Chances are it didn't since Audacity never gave her that missing piece that she went to his cave for, that last time. Besides she certainly doesn't have the key to the Eluvian, so even if it did work, it doesn't ACTUALLY work.

Morrigan also stole a book from a dalish clan on eluvians.

That too.

I'm confident it does work, just inactive because it's in the crossroads, and it wasn't there on a play through where I had Merrill destroy it.

I remember Morrigan saying that she paid a price in regards to getting access to the Crossroads so maybe she used Blood Magic and made deals with Demons/Spirits?

Yeah, I'd definitely be interested in figuring out what exactly went on when Morrigan restored her Eluvian.

It's also important to remember that when it comes to scientific research (and yes, it's not "science" per say, but there's definitely some experimenting and deductive reasoning going on with both women's efforts with the Eluvian) that sometimes, even failures can be instructive and useful. Think about how long it took, say, Alexander Graham Bell to make a working telephone. Any time you're attempting to create something great, or solve a mystery, or anything of that nature, there's bound to be some false starts and dead ends along the way.

Even if she did restore it, without the key it is useless. That is my point.

Reused graphical texture.

It's a good point.

But that's exactly where Morrigan started, so it's not impossible for her to be stuck. Especially since Briala and Morrigan know about eluvians so the knowledge is out there and Merrill doesn't have to rely on Audacity.

Which was my point.

IIRC it was there in my playthrough, even if it was destroyed.

A very unique graphical texture that looks nothing like any other eluvian in the crossroads, and one that wasn't there on the play through it was destroyed in.

Yeah, but I think the missing piece that Audacity teased Merrill with, was indeed the key. After all, she had completed the Eluvian when she went to him, but she missed the final "piece" to activate it. Without the key, all she got is a mirror that doesn't even reflect. To my knoweldge there isn't a workaround to missing a key to an Eluvian (I may be wrong, I am not so up to date on Eluvian lore). But yeah, after Morrigna I would argue that Merrill is the next most knowledgable person about Eluvians.

To my knowledge the glass in the Eluvia is broken if Merrill destroyed it, yet it is whole if she kept it intact, and it looks like the one in Merrill's house.

It may just be a spiritual reflection of the original mirror within the nexus.

Isn't her Eluvian found stashed away in a nobe's house somewhere in Emerald Graves?

I doub't she could carry that around in her travels (if she lived)

Oh, after looking around, it seems that Merrill's Eluvian was in the Winter Palace, which means that Morrighan fiddled around with it and deemed it useless

I think you people are still suffering from the whole DA2 chantry/religious atmosphere bias thing because (as it turns out in Inquisition) Merrill was right about a lot things magic/fade/spirits-wise. And she's NOT stupid or arrogant. She resisted Audacity for 6 years+ and was cautious enough to bring Hawke and co. with her when she finally decided to interact with the demon again. She is never shown using her blood magic for personal gain. She is shown to be surprisingly competent, able to glean much about the eluvians despite having very little to work with and she even succeeds in cleansing her shard of the taint.

If you think her meekness/kindess/social naivete is an indication of incompetence/weakness/stupidity then you are no different from Marethari. For all her good intentions, guess what her pride/arrogance got her.

Morrigan is basically the more ruthless/assertive version of Merrill. I'd say they're pretty even, intelligence-wise. Intelligence alone does not guarantee results though or scientists would be running the world, not politicians.

Is Morrigan just that much better?

Yes. Merrill isn't stupid, but her background knowledge and her education was lacking compared to Morrigan's.

I agree. People underestimate Merrill because of her head-in-the-clouds demeanor but ignor her accomplishments. Restoring an Eluvian with no help and no resources from scratch is amazing. There is also the Blood Magic = bad crowd. Blood Magic is a tool just like any magic and using Blood Magic to boil the blood of your enemies is nor more unethical than throwing a fireball in their face. Many Blood Mages, Mages and sentient beings in general have used their power for personal gain but Merrill never did. The only issue I have with Merrill is her dealing with Demons but even then she takes precautions to make sure she didn't harm anyone. While I think Morrigan is more competant than almost everyone we've met in the series including Merrill, she has accomplished more than most, even if she ended up destroying the Eluvian.

I think Morgain tells you that she searched for a whole mirror, that most are broken.  I don't think she had to fix the one she has, it worked.

Ok one more time, Morrigan fixed a Eluvian in Dragon Age: Last Court.

Corypheus and Inq have created the breach not Solas.
