Will it ever happen?

The current MP is fun but it's the same thing over and over and over and over again. Why no co-op campaign where a group of friends can get together and adventure?

Think back to the greatest game Bioware (PC gaming in general) has ever seen - NeverWinter Nights!!!!

The scripts can be written, it can be done. I ran a World of Rhun server for a small group (10-15 players) for almost 6 years. Most fun i've ever had gaming because we had the resources and ability to do whatever we wanted thanks to the world builder. I understand that this game cannot offer those benefits to players because of the consoles but........

Though -- as I'm sure you'll remember -- there wasn't actually much interest in co-op campaigning back then, which is why Bio didn't even bother to make the HotU campaign work in co-op.

Would things be different now? Beats me.

One of the best parts as I remember was building and testing new player areas.  The difficulty with multiplayer here relates to some of the same single player issues with added internet complexities -its internal com system is largely unstable and internet communication challenges just seem to tip the cart over, so to speak.

A lot of games have internet issues keeping groups stable and often finding a group with the proper skills is a headache.  Co-op is ideal for most situations, however a division of labor with the addition of an NPC companions to help deal with many of these challenges.

I don't see how co-op fixes the issue. I suppose it is easier for some who have a gamer friend that shares interests that they want to play with but I don't see it being substantially different.

More worryingly while MP is overblown as negatively impacting SP, Co-Op fundamentally impacts the story if it's more than a total after thought.

It will happen in the next game. Which will be a full blown MMO. DA:I was the prototype for it.

I think if the MP mode could have some tweaks to allow friends to play with you from the same room, it would be a nice addition no?

One of things I wanted for MP (ME or DA) was for legit co-op missions instead of horde mode or dungeon crawlers

And yet the devs said the game started off as an mmo....Google it.

DG clarified this, it was a completely different game that started off as one

DAO started as a LAN-based MP game - a successor to NWN1, whereby each player would have an "origin" and meet at Ostagar.

I guess that means that the OP is pushing for the original DA design intent.

I hope, it won't happen. Bots for DA:I-MP would be preferable.
