So, I for whatever reason have still gone to major gaming sites like IGN, Gamespot, Kotaku, Polygon, etc, for reviews and information.

Increasingly though, I can't help but think they just aren't really for me or the best place to find information anymore. I realized this recently with Polygon which still had some things I kind of liked but it still just doesn't feel like the best to place to go for news about games or gaming in general anymore. It seems they always just have things that I don't get or understand or seem off.

So I'm asking for you aid, BSN, in the search for great sites and information about games, reviews, or other kinds of information. Metacritic will not be accepted as an answer under any circumstances.

I'm not sure about other sources but I definitely think there's something out there that works really well for games generally.

Of course, this place certainly counts, but if anyone has some things they want to share I would be much :)

Jim Sterling (I like a lot of his viewpoints but don't always share them)

Yahtzee Croshaw (Incredibly funny and my shared adoration for SH2 and a few other titles would beckon that I follow up on his reviews, which are partially done for comic relief while also having some actual interesting discussion and fair critics of said games)

Gamereactor.dk (Basically just a local site that I follow who are pretty cool people and do thorough reviews, sometimes they do two from different authors if there are larger mixed feelings on a subject)

Other than that -- I generally stick to myself and friends for info on interesting games and don't overtly need recommendations for others in regards to finding good games. It is nice when you find one that turns out rather great though.

For western stuff I mostly use Jim sterling, Yahtzee, Angry joe. You know the usual suspects.

For Japanese stuff I tend to use Siliconera and Gematsu.

Angry Joe and Zero Punctuation (Yahtzee) are my go-to reviewers. Joe gives a good in-depth analysis of games, even if you disagree with his final score, and Yahtzee's videos are nice and quick.

I also watch Angry Joe and Jim Sterling.

Yahtzee is good once you get used to his review style of being almost entirely criticism with comic relief thrown in.

For every game I might buy, I'd check at least six different sites, skim-read their reviews for important points, then form an overall picture of the game in question: Gamespot, IGN, Kotaku, PC Gamer, Rock Paper Shotgun and Polygon. Then I'd check Steam/GOG user reviews, then make a decision.

Here's my impression of each one:

Gamespot: generally slightly harsh reviews, a bit low on updates, a bit boring.

IGN: generally slightly over-enthusiastic reviews, decent amount of updates, I like that they do TV shows, movies and comic books as well.

Kotaku: generally balanced reviews, very high update rate of varying qualities, their politics do occasionally flair up, but I've got pretty good at ignoring them. I keep checking them mostly for the aforementioned update rate.

PC Gamer: generally solid reviews, though sometimes a bit over-enthusiastic (see their Dragon Age II review). I used to subscribe to their UK print edition, so I pretty much only keep checking them for nostalgia.

Rock Paper Shotgun: generally slightly harsh reviews with a bit of snark, a decent amount of slightly off-beat PC-centric content.

Polygon: generally fairly balanced reviews, lots of interesting editorials.

I watch Zero Punctuation mostly for entertainment, and there is something I don't quite like about watching Angry Joe and Jim Sterling videos that I can't quite put my finger on, though I do enjoy some TotalBiscuit WTF is... videos.

I only go to Angry Joe. Not for the actual review but just for the giggles.

Hm, well definitely a bunch of ones to try here, I've heard of Angry Joe before, not so much a lot of the other things.

I definitely really like Siliconera though, but that's only for Japanese games, hoping to find something better for gaming as a whole...

Total Biscuit. Other than that I'd just watch the first few parts of a walk through or lets play on you tube to get a feel for the game.

Kotaku and Polygon are a steaming pile of **** plagued with identity politics and grotesque ham handed review bias. To be avoided like a hobo infected with Ebola

Come to think of it Kotaku TAY is a pretty good site too. It's pretty much just a community site but it covers a wide variety of topics and opinions.

Escapist, NicheGamer, GameBanshee and TechRaptor for most gaming related news.

For reviews, I just rely mainly on videos, streams, news stories and word of mouth to build an opinion before buying. Total Biscuit's Port Report is always worth a look though.

There's plenty of opinions out there but ultimately it's my opinion that matters so I listen to popular sources like Yahtzee and Pissed Off Pedro for the laughs but I filter out most of it anyway. I generally know enough about a game to know whether I'd like it before I buy it.

That's why the Port Report is my central starting point for multiplatform games, because very few critics pay attention to the state of release on PC beyond the obvious, and none with the length and detail of Total Biscuit.

That's not a bad thing at all, necessarily, in fact I think sometimes the problem with the whole big reviewer guy pie in the sky thing that dictates opinions and so on... it's not a very open situation.

Comparatively something like Kotaku TAY you get people talking amongst themselves freely and unrestricted and it kind of creates a sort of game review vortex thingy. BSN is similar really, like you end up reading about games and opinions similarly.

I still want to check all these sites though and stuff though, of course, honestly I haven't heard of a lot of them.

Confining myself just to Youtube for the moment, to preview games I'm thinking about purchasing, I'll go through the usual suspects (TotalBiscuit, Angry Joe, and whatever other Let's Plays comes up at the top of a quick search). But these aren't my favorite gaming personalities; those would be Errant Signal and MrBtongue. Their discussions tend to be very in-depth and spoilerific; consequently, their videos on whatever game they're talking about tend to appear well after the game was released. Still, their way of talking about games (mechanics, theme, etc.) interests me a lot more than consumer report-type reviews.

Hm well I started to go through all these, I like techreactor a lot for whatever reason, Kotaku TAY, and Errant Signal.

It seems like a lot of people like the big personalities like Totalbiscuit/Angry Joe/Yahtzee, I can't help but think they're more entertaining than informative though.

Just angry Joe tbh.
if I need info on a game, I just use Google and the choices that pop up there.

Although I skip reviewers like IGN
