Every time I listen to the words of I Am The One, it brings Solas to mind, and I was wondering if it was hinting at his background.

Lyrics:

I feel sun
Through the ashes in the sky.

Where's the one
Who'll guide into the night?

What's begun
Is the war that will
Force this divide.

What's to come
Is fire and the end of time.

I am the one
Who can recount
What we've lost.

I am the one
Who will live on.

I have run
Through the fields
Of pain and sighs.

I have fought
To see the other side.

I am the one
Who can recount
What we've lost.

I am the one
Who will live on.

I think it's more likely to be Mythal.  (The "Lady of Regrets", and one of the few entities in Thedas who pass from one lifetime to the next without being wiped of her memories and connection to the past.)

It was the "I am the one who will live on" line that really makes me think it's about Solas - especially with what he says to Flemmeth regarding his actions.

It certainly fits Solas, but how would an Orlesian bard know enough to write that song about him?

Weeeelll the Orlesians and every other human culture stole a ton of Elvhen cultural items. It would be weird either way. I think it's more likely to be intended for the Inquisitor but it does work well for Mythal.

Also, Leliana outright knew an elven song due to her time as a bard, don't forget. From codex entries, we know Orlesians love taking elven artifacts from the Dales and displaying them in their homes as conversation pieces. Doesn't surprise me that their songs have been collected, too. I think the song "Once We Were" also fits into this category.

Also, I agree with the OP that the song sounds like its about Solas, though I could see it for Mythal, as well. Solas works b/c he seems destined to end up being the Last Survivor, which is basically what the song is lamenting in the chorus, and he's very focused on "what we've lost" as a rule. Mythal works b/c she too has clung to life through the ages and she is technically one who can recount what's been lost. However, the song is lamenting the past and sounding very sad and melancholic about it. Mythal seems to have embraced the current times and also tends to focus towards the future, to the point where she seems almost (or actually is) precognitive. So, I think it fits Solas more.

But who knows Solas enough to write that song about him? Wouldn't that song reflect his state of mind AFTER he woke up, so it must have been written by someone who knows him and his plans quite well? It seems like a lot of contrived circumstances for a song about Solas to be sung in Orlesian taverns. Perhaps it's about some other survivor of the fall of Arlathan, someone who has since died?

Maybe he wrote emo poetry ages ago and the verses survived anonymously through the centuries. lol

For an actual attempt at an in-universe explanation of the song, Maryden might just have written a song about being a survivor of the tragedy of Haven and the Breach in general and fighting to live through it all and survivor's guilt. In-universe, I doubt the song is about Solas or Mythal or anyone specific.

Out-of-universe, I still definitely believe the song itself applies to Solas in a thematic/narrative sense. I think the Bioware writers writing it might have had him in mind when they did so.

It could just be a thematic point. Lots of stories have that type of topical approach.

I always thought it was about the Warden from Origins. It's first sung (in elvish) at the end of that game and the lyrics sum up pretty well how a dude fighting through the blight might feel. The Warden can then live on literally (as in they survive), or figuratively (as a hero/legend etc.) depending on how the game ended.

I think the song can apply to Solas, but I don't think it's specifically about him.

Applicability, not allegory

(That said, I think it applies to the elves in general, Mythal, Solas, and on a spiritual level even an Elven Warden trying to restore his/her people.)

I would think Flemeth. Why write a song about Fen'Harel in a game that barely mentions him?

Pretty much this. The song was first in DAO, so I doubt that Solas was a consideration.

I'd like it to be about the Warden.. Maybe it's not Flemeth, I dunno. It plays at the end credits, right?

In any case, I liked Inon Zur much more.. especially this elven stuff in DAO/DA2.

I also thought Solas.

It's sung in Elvhen, so I'm not sure why it would be about the Warden. The devs had all the major lore stuff figured out before the first game, so its possible it was written with this in mind even though Fen'Harel isn't really mentioned in the game. Or it could just be more generic, and be about the other ancient Elves like Abelas.
