Simple enough question. Of the available weapons, which should I be giving to my squadmates ?

The wiki does have some advice, but I'd like to know if anyone disagrees.

Heavy Pistols

Due to its faster rate of fire, the Predator is still the best weapon for Jacob and Jack, who lack a rapid-fire weapon. For most other squadmates the Carnifex is preferred for its improved damage output

That seems simple enough. With the Phalanx being a bad choice for squadmates even if I did own the Firepower pack.

SMG

This weapon is very effective on squadmates, particularly prior to acquiring the Locust - they do not suffer accuracy reductions due to recoil, allowing them to land virtually every shot. In addition, the burst fire of the Shuriken forces your squad to drop back into cover more frequently, keeping them alive longer on higher difficulty levels.

Squadmates do not suffer from accuracy-related issues, making this weapon a better SMG choice for them.

Because squadmates operate better with the Tempest than the Locust, it is recommended that you keep the Locust for Shepard while equipping the Tempest on squadmates.
So use the Tempest on squadmates when I can, otherwise use the Locust.

Shotguns

The M-22 renders the M-23 Katana obsolete, even with its lower thermal clip capacity.

The Scimitar's high rate of fire and increased ammo capacity give it a greater DPS than any other shotgun, even against armor.

For Grunt it may be a better idea to use the M-22 Eviscerator Shotgun over the M-300 because the Eviscerator has a longer range and has similar damage rate. Grunt may deal more damage with the M-22 in certain situations than he would with the M-300 because squad members tend to shoot shotguns at a longer range than a player would, and tend to shoot more often with weapons that possess a larger clip and higher rate of fire than weapons with a lower fire rate and clip size.

Evicerator as soon as I can equip it. But I'm not sure what to do when the Scimitar becomes available, or if Grunt should get the Claymore.

Assault Rifles

This is usually the best weapon for any teammate that can use assault rifles as they are very accurate with it and deal high damage even with the 45% decrease. The low ammo doesn't affect teammates. It's good for teammates who are providing suppressive fire. Despite the issues associated with burst-fire, they still fire frequently.

The M-96 Mattock makes the Vindicator slightly obsolete; it has a much higher fire rate and fulfills the same role of tactical mid-to-long range combat. The Vindicator is still a good gun considering that its lower rate of fire makes it easier to make shots count- as opposed to spamming the trigger, which wastes ammo.
It sounds like the Mattock might be the best option if I owned the Firepower pack. But I don't, so the Vindicator beats other assault rifles.

Sniper Rifles
These I have no clue about.

I agreed with the other stuff (except that the Geth Plasma Shotgun is a better choice than the Eviscerator if you have it since it is longer range). But as far as Assault Rifle, the Vindicator is better because of the way the squad mates use it. With the Mattock they fire three shots per firing cycle. With the Vindicator they put out 9 shots per firing cycle.

Also, if you have it, the Incisor is excellent for squad mates. Otherwise I'm not sure. Perhaps the Viper? You would need to watch your squad mate to see how many shots he takes each time he pops out to fire. In ME3 I have heard one person say they tested the Viper versus other one shot weapons and found the Viper was better on Garrus.

Why are we considering the effectiveness of shotguns at range ?

Grunt also has assault rifles. The other shotgun users have heavy pistols. So I'm thinking we go for a good close range shotgun and switch to the other weapon when combat it taking place at longer ranges. So I'm thinking Claymore for Grunt, Scimitar for the other shotgun users.

I just noticed this on the Viper page:

AI squad members do not take advantage of the Viper's high rate of fire and will prefer to fire a single shot before going back to cover. Thus, the Viper is a particularly poor sniper weapon for them as they are better served by the Incisor and Mantis sniper rifles, which fit their tactics better.

If that behaviour is the case, then the Widow is best for Legion, Mantis for everyone else. The Incisor might be a better choice, but I don't own that DLC. I'll have to watch a squadmate using a Viper to be sure.

Because I never let my squad get closer to the enemy than Shepard. I always position my squad somewhere to the rear while Shepard takes point. This gets the enemies to focus on Shepard and keeps the squad alive longer.

So why use shotguns when the enemies are at a distance ?

Why not switch to the squadmates long range weapon ?

The GPS is a long range weapon, does more damage than the Carnifex, and is good against shields and barriers. The Carnifex is good against armor. So, for instance, the GPS is good on Geth missions, while the Carnifex is good on Blood Pack missions. You can also change them up based on current protection status. So, for instance, while fighting the Praetorian on Horizon I switch Mordin and Kasumi back and forth between the Locust and Carnifex depending on whether it has a barrier up or armor.

Jack with Warp Ammo and the GPS eats barriers much faster than any squadmate with Warp.
