So according to Gaider, Inquisition spans a time period of around 3 years.

I vote for @badkenbad's guesstimates be promoted to canon.

Agreed.

If it means not being treated like an on-call source of encyclopedic information, to be used in the settling of all headcanons and fandom disputes inside 140 characters max, I'm all for it.

Insofar as this goes, even if you thought I was talking about in-game time, I would have thought the "I dunno" part of it should have made it apparent I wasn't making an edict.

Well the tweets after that in response to people treating what you said as canon led me to believe you intentionally troll the fanbase sometimes as a means of having fun as our expense, which is why I sounded bitter. It's one thing to be confused, but I don't like the idea of the lead writer toying with fans for the heck of it. I apologize if it really was just confusion this time.

Ok I didn't participate in this discussion earlier but I'm confused now. It took about 3 years to make Hinderlands, not the time frame DA:I took part in right?

lol I thought you meant the story we experience in-game took about 3 years. And no I wasn't taking you super seriously like some people around here but now I'm curious!

You can never leave the Hinterlands....Ever. It's a dark mark on your soul.

So here's an idea for the passage of time: anytime you teleport to a camp - bring back campfires at night, just a simple touch. Could be something interactive with some witty banter or a simple animation. In the case of the hissing wastes, have something similar only during the day and show the unbearable-ness of the daytime sun.

Wow, and Gabe Newell, who pretty much created Valve and Half-Life, trolls his fanbase on an almost daily basis and people just keep coming back for more.

The whole thing regarding the Hinterlands is a joke. After the game was released there were statements thrown around by players and reviewers about spending forever in the Hinterlands, trying to complete all the objectives there, and so forth. As the first area we play through, the Hinterlands is the largest and also has the most amount of side quests and other objectives, in addition to being connected to the mage portion of the mission progression. So it's pretty easy to spend 20 hours there just running around.

See this piece in Kotaku, "PSA: If You're Playing Dragon Age, Leave The Hinterlands."

Ah ok I get it. I feel silly. Twitter sarcasm is hard to read.

On that topic, it took me a very very long time to leave the Hinderlands. I'm doing another playthrough recently and I left the Hinderlands as soon as I could. It is a black hole that one!

I'd say a year...year and a half at best.

I was shocked Origins was a year.  Hit that convo with Wynne in camp and she was like "Been a year since we left the Circle...."

I'm like...wtf... when did THAT happen.

I always thought the time should be addressed, considering you're literally traveling between several countries every time you pit stop in Skyhold.

But again, things were made up on the fly and as a result everything in the game seems wishy washy and vague. I still think Inquisition is some of Bioware writing staff's lowest effort so far. Yeah, yeah, me2 didn't have a plot, yadayada, I think Inquisition is worse.

If there is one thing this game needs to copy off Skyrim or whatever, its a calendar of some kind. Shouldn't take more then a couple days to decide how big you want Thedas to be and work out the appropriate distances and travel times to different places.

1.Me2 had a plot. it's just built together with smaller plots, like a tv show.

2.All the Bw but da2 are pretty vague on time.It a consequence of being able to choose which place you want to go to .

.....Elder scrolls are even worse in that concept. Sure you can tell that a day has past but nothing in game indicates anything more then that.

It doesn't help that ingame time is 60x faster than normal. I mean, I'm sure it doesn't take an hour to travel a few hundred meters.

ME2 has a central plot much like the reboot of BSG had a central plot and myth arc. Which is to say it's kind of incoherent and seems to be put together on the fly. The character specific content divorced from the context of the story was really good though. And the Suicide Mission was the most epic thing Bioware's ever done.

Agree on this. ME2 is just filer with no story. But companions saves it. And best ending. This is what ME3 ending must be, just with races.

If that's correct then they really didn't do a good job of making it feel like that. They don't even mention time passing in game.

I thought that this was clear given the absence of a fundamental feature in an open world like day/night cycle

Sooo, three years? And Corypheus just sits on his bumm letting the Inquisition build up it's forces and consolidate it's power lol. I like DA:I and all, but that's kind of cray cray.

And that "thing to know" is to know not to take a damn thing he says as serious anymore.

I suppose it's just easy to assume he would know enough about these things, being the ex-head writer. Input is welcome, be he's just 1 guy at the end of the day.

Time passing is difficult... you can finish What Pride Had Wrought quest, then explore all other areas (= a lot of travelling) and complete all side quests for dozens of hours (playing time) and Cullen at the start of Doom Upon All The World tells you either way, that your army is still in Arbor Wilds... we cannot take time passing too seriously in the detail ;)

It has a plot, it's just not a good one.

Then again, the plot of Mass Effect is arguably not it's strongest asset. What people always focus on is the narrative parts of Mass Effect 2, which make the game better.

And Dragon Age, for that matter. People love narrative bits, but they don't like overall plots because they are...well, mostly afterthoughts

No, not three years.

David Gaider @davidgaider

Evidently some folks are taking my 'DAI took three years' thing VERY seriously. Like, seriouscat serious.

David Gaider @davidgaider

DAI did not take three years. The Hinterlands...now THAT took three years. Like, at *least*.

This should just be posted into the OP considering how many aren't bothering to read the last couple pages.

It's nothing but sidequests. Just sidequest after sidequest after sidequest, and even the actual plot feels like a sidequest. The squadmates are cool.

True, would have been interesting if the Eluvian played a critical role in the story after that - like Coryfish is forced to attack you by himself because the well gave you knowledge of the intact mirrors and now you can pre-empt his every move instantly - and you'd be without your army or companions you didn't take through the mirror.

3 years doesn't sound right. 1-1,5 maybe
