What causes the matchmaking bug?

I'm fairly lucky in that I rarely suffer from it but last night was a case in point.

Trying to play with the delightful Kaileena_Sands.  We've played plenty of times before with either of us able to host with no big great lag.

However last night just kept looping lost connection if either of us hosted, we had to lobby hop randoms and spam invite to get together.  If the host left and it fell to either of us, fail again.

We both did full re-boots and closed Origin which usually works but not on this occasion.

Cirvante and I can only ever play if Aetika hosts, everyone else causes one of us to lose connection.  I'm generally of the opinion that Origin is to blame but Dev input would be nice.

I have a bit of a theory about the lost connection bug and how prevalent it is.  For me it seems I get it by far the most often if I have left a lobby and then tried to enter another one.  As in I enter a lobby, people do not ready up or some other reason cause me to leave the lobby.  I then go back into lobby matching and try to enter a new lobby (I have to reset the lobby to 'random') and a good deal of the time I get the lost connection thing.

If BioWare knows of some of the causes of this, even if they don't have a good fix for them I wish they would tell us.  Do they perhaps have a connection boot thing in the game because lobby hopping affects the game?  Should a person wait for 30 seconds before trying to join a new lobby after leaving one?

I wish I knew the answer to this. I would share a few small bits of info that may help other players.. In my experience...

-If the music has stopped in the Multiplayer menu area then leave and reconnect. No music= no connection to servers no matter how many times I try.

Leaving and reconnecting to the servers can also remedy the "you're the only person who wants to play that type of run" issue, though I appreciate that could be time too.

-If the dragon is on a tiny sliver of health and flies away, resist the urge to fire the trebuchet. I have seen it bug out on 3 occasions with this after someone has killed it with the trebuchet. He doesn't die he just flies around, then flies into the ground and eventually everyone DC's......

Any other useful tips out there?

Only happens once in a blue moon on PC for me, so I would guess it's down to connection quality between the clients and the origin server.

The game is very picky on host, you can easily fall into this "join loop" when the game "thinks" the host you try to join is not optimal.
Ironically enough, I can sometimes join very laggy pugs but cannot join some friends that live close to me.

I am on 360 and it has been suggested here that there are regional settings......don;t think so in my experience, I get teamed with a host from Brazil, has happened several times and the lag is off the charts......I know the answer for lag is to host but at this point I would rather not, I will stay for two games in a pug if the team is half decent, sometimes three. But it's so hard finding a lobby on 360, until I upgrade to one on the weekend I take whatever:)

In your case, you were unable to connect to my host but I was able to connect to your host. The lag was horrible but that is not an issue here. Recently, I also got connected to some hosts in Latin America with pings over 1200 msec. It were playable but barely as this kind of lag hurts. It means that there is something else apart from ping/distance/lag as you are implying. It is not lost packets though most certainly. I've had plenty of games with teleporting and abilities not hitting (sign of lost packets) and connect to these hosts just fine.

I blame Origin. It also still fails to show if the lobby is full and you cannot join the game. And this is 6 months post-release which is ridiculous.

@sabreracer: You need also to clean the game and Origin cache folders. http://help.ea.com/e...talling-origin/

http://answers.ea.co...ce/td-p/4126271(scroll down to section "How to delete Origin cache files")

and preferably, you browser cache as well http://help.ea.com/e...-fix-pc-issues/

have you tried rebooting your router ?

just a thought but they are basically a pc and do require a reboot regularly to get rid of random problems like the ram not refreshing as empty or routing tables getting messed up /

for me I have found that just like in the days of me3 mp I need to spam the "wasd" keys in random order whilst searching for lobby /loading into games to minimise the number of drop outs, I also found that the game as a gigantic memory leak if you do FC and then change lobbies and redo FC, 5 times I had the exact same problem with more or less the exact same result of over 300gig of virtual memory being used by DAI (win8.1 with vmem set to system managed size) causing the app crash, so its possible you also are suffering from similar problems, oh and the ati.ace event log spam doesn't help so if you have an amd card I'd advise turning off its event logging (google has the answer)

and then the last part of the problem is of course lag, nothing to be done about that part though :(

@Akots: I mean the game tries to find a "good" host but it usually fails, I guess there's something wrong with their ping /packet loss rate calculation method.

Also I find when somtimes I cannot join certain hosts (e.g. my friends' friend) the game ends up in a joining loop (lost connection to session -> returns to main menu -> automatically reconnect -> lost connection again -> return to mainmenu), this "automatic reconnection" feature is actually making things even worse.

Using google dns helps sometimes, but not all the time. I still get the issue.

We did rebooot everything. For me, the PC and router together since I had a lovely power outage.

I wonder will be ever be able to play again together.  :crying:  We need a nice host to create a lobby for us. xD Because hopping in between 10 lobbies to get someone we can both connect to is not fun.

And I've always suspected the game to be a giant memory leak, so I am not surprised.

I strongly suspect EA use the modified Ultima Online tool as that was the only thing that is checked with regard to connection by customer service http://help.ea.com/e...e-and-uo-trace/

If there are some things there which are "broken" or mismatching, you cannot connect normally and may lose Origin heartbeat. But it is a good way to check how EA servers perceive your connection for matchmaking.

I've been using UO Tracer for a long time, but honestly it doesn't help much if you do have issues with certain EA servers, first you need to know the IP address /domain name of the actual EA server responsible for DA:I matchmaking, plus it is usually not your router/ ISP's fault because the troubled server (e.g. high packet loss rate) is probably located in another country.

Also I doubt they'd use a third party app like UO Tracer to determine lobby quality, I believe it's rather game-specified, for example, I can find ME3 lobbies at any time/ any difficulty, but in DA:I it's completely another story.

You can get server IP with any utility monitoring your ports. You can do it even with Resource Monitor on W7. I sometimes use this one http://www.nirsoft.n...affic_view.html even though it is a bit cumbersome.

PC

  • TCP: 80, 443, 9988, 17502, 20000-20100, 22990, 42127
  • UDP: 3659, 14000-14016, 22990-23006, 25200-25300

I've been doing this since day1 trying to find out where the connection problem lies ;).

It's still typical "blaze server" thingy as EA did with most of their games.

So far I've found 2 EA servers DragonAgeInquisition.exe tries to connect to:

spring14.gosredirector.ea.com     ip: 159.153.244.219

gosprodfeapp0320.ea.com           ip: 159.153.73.164

A more comprehensive list of things DAI tries to do after launching game can be found here:

The problem is I still need to know which server is responsible for DA:I matchmaking, or maybe neither of them.

Any ideas? Or perhaps I should monitor Origin.exe activites as well?

I have connection problems with some of my friends even after we successfully played together many times. The bug I get is the infinite loop of download data which can be stopped only if I exit the game bu ctrl-alt-del. This happens if both of us try to host. I have no idea what causes this, I thought it may be related to the connection, but I really can't say.

IMO, these are both dragon age servers. They do challenges and update your profile and should not be involved in establishing p2p actual connections. Another IMO, Origin is doing the matchmaking. There is a lot of traffic though so it is hard to tell exactly.
