If your next computer could be a quantum computer what would its behaviour be like?

Could such a machine predict user input before you've even input something?

Quantum computers don't work like that. They're just better at certain tasks, like the ones that involve many permutations. You can actually buy one now.

Oh ok didn't know that...

I was thinking of something else ....    I can't recall the program I was watching but they were talking about a computer and used the term "quantum computer" to describe a machine that could predict user input before you strike a key...   I think it was something about time travel and a use of such a computer as a remote viewer..

They weren't talking about quantum computers, they were talking about space magic.

That is probably correct...  I think Morgan Freeman was the host

Heh

Anyway, a quantum computer couldn't guess user input before they press any button or whatever. That isn't computing, that is precognition, plain and simple. What a QC would be very good at is stuff like password/encryption cracking based on the qubit-architecture's superposition principle (something which I do not understand well enough to try and elaborate), which is the reason why many national agencies are sponsoring QC development.

Yeah, but we're just gonna use it to play video games and watch porn.

I'm a proud owner of a 100-150GBish Quantum HDD.

2-16GB-HDD-Quantum-Fireball-ST2-1-AT-IDE

^ not mine, just for show.

It must be somewhere near...

To be fair, Quantum Mechanics is sorcery. ;)

My cell phone predicts what I am going to type before I type it, does that qualify as a quantum computer?

More than likely it'd end up turning into a sofa, an anvil and a ball of string...

Or am I thinking of the infinite improbability drive again?

Yeah I did mean a quantum computer using quantum state particles as processors.. That's why I attributed the random effects in my OP...

It does not predict what you're going to type in. it predicts what you are currently typing in. This whole QC will know the answer for my query before I even type it in is not prediction, its precognition. Ergo nonsensical fantasy.
