I have never been a fan of BW adding multiplayer to any of their games however I understand this is another selling point to move units.What I was wondering is does anyone know exactly how popular the multiplayer is for DA:I?

Pretty sure the latest expansion upped its popularity. Certainly made me start playing and I barely bothered with it before. Dragon fights are fun.

EA likes to have online content for their games so everyone can enjoy them with friends. I personally preferred ME3's MP over DAI's but if they keep popping new expansions once in a while and keeping their servers in check, I might come back on a later date to play more.
