mosspit and I have both asked, and you seem to be avoiding the question. What is a tank?

Actually, you guys have me genuinely curious. :)

Would you consider an Arcane Warrior a tank?

What about games like Guild Wars (if you've played); I routinely "tanked" elite instances on my Elementalist (elemental mage, if you haven't played) while using a staff and wearing the lightest armor in the game; same with my Monk (healing class). A guildmate could routinely do it on an assassin. Warriors could, of course, also pull it off.

They all achieved this through different methods, but end of the day, they were the one running in taking the beating; the assassin could run a large portion of the elite areas solo, both tanking AND dealing all the damage.

Would you guys consider this tanking?

Thats fine, Sarielle. I nv played Guild Wars but I believe the concept of combat roles is the same. Thats your Elementalist fulfilling tanking and dps roles. Why not?
I speak for myself but soteria may or may not agree with me is that dww is a great (if not the best) warrior dpser. Dww is also a viable tank due to reasons alr discussed. Arguably, dww is the best overall warrior build taking in account general combat prowess.
However, for me, I am just unable to justify that that a dww is a better tank than a SnS. Combat circumstance may make it so that the tank role is marginalized (due to maybe a dps doing too great a job). In the end, a dww marginalizing a tank role DOES NOT mean it is doing better in a tank role. It just means a dww is an excellent dpser. Larry strongly agrees that a dww is a better tank than SnS. What I feel is sustaining this ping pong is that we do not have a common basis on what a tank role is. Hence, the request for opinionating a tank role.

Yes, the Arcane Warrior is a tank.

For me to explain what a tank is, it's easiest to just cover the three combat roles. The first is the damage dealer, or dps. They're around to kill stuff fast. The faster they kill stuff, the easier it is on the healer and the tank. The second is the healer. Obviously, they heal the group. In DA:O it's really not necessary to have a dedicated healer, but whatever. The third is the tank. The tank's job is to mitigate incoming damage. They do this by having high magic resist, armor, or evasion, typically. And obviously, they need to be the focus of the enemies to mitigate damage.

So yes, an Arcane Warrior is a tank. In World of Warcraft, a mage or a warlock would be used as a tank in certain fights that required high magic resist. The mage would spellsteal a buff that absorbed 90% of incoming magic damage, or the warlock would use a demon to absorb damage. I haven't played Guild Wars so I couldn't really comment.

TL;DR: Dual wield warriors (dex builds excepted) aren't tanks. They are dps. Killing stuff fast =/= tanking.
