Blah blah blah horrible execution blah blah blah terrible plot design, yea we get it everyone is suddenly a game critic/dev-expert. I'ma go back to my game and let you blow steam to someone who cares.
My problem with the Ball Quest is not the quest itself, I adored it. Though I honestly wish that I could have wore different clothes, damnet I want my human noble inquistor to wear a nice dress, and her cullen to wear a doublet ![]()
anyways, my issue is that this is really the only time we see the civil war, and IMO the only time we see the 'game' with consqeunses. The orlais areas and quests should be filled with the civil war being the main backdrop, you should be faced with it where-ever you go in Orlais. Even in the Western apporach, you should have people comment on it. The exalted marches and Emerald graves should be truely horrorfic and show the war in all its horror.
Furthermore I would have Val Royeaux expaned to be a zone of its own, ie the whole city. You should see how it affects the soliders, the nobles, the commoners and everyone.
In the avenue of the Sun and the slums of Orlais, show how it affects people. Show how people are going hungry as food must go for the war. Show the loss it has on families. Show the fact that even gangs pick a side between the two canidates.
In the Imperial Palace and the Summer Bazaar, one should see the nobles PoV. One should get embroiled into the game of politics here, and see again how it affects things here. Also if Gaspard wins, I want to see him be crowned at the palace.
In the Alianage, you should see what the oppression of the elves are like. This is an alianage that has about 10k elves living in it, yet is in far worse condition then any other. We should see it, see the horror of it. In regards to the civil war, all three factions have a role here. For Celene burned down an allianage in Halamshiral, and despite that being another city, it would efffect things here. You should see people who suffered then, see the hazing ritual of the Cheviliers. See the fact no one cares about them. Yet, you should of course be able to do things to help them.
You're missing the point. The game gives you 1 (one) way of dealing with this situation. That's it. Word of God. No other choices. Most RPG quest give at least a poor man's 2 choices.
If they had given you another choice, it would've led to a game over as well. You simply can't walk in and demand the support and respect. The Inquisition isn't strong, in fact, the Orlesian army is the main bulk of the Inquisition's forces, because Orlais is HUGE.
It's like having the choice between walking off a cliff and walking away from the cliff. One is certain death/failure, no matter how you twist it and the other is survival/success.
The timer design is bad not because it's difficult to dispatch 10 demons and 10 other mooks under a time limit. It's bad because it makes no sense. The nobles don't see me. So what?
I hate the damn timer. I really, really do. But lore wise it makes sense. You and the Inquisition are there to prove yourselves. To prove that you're trustworthy and to partially cleanse the negative image given by the Chantry.
How trustworthy is someone who sneaks away from prying eyes behind closed doors and into locked off areas? You've got to see Orlesians as paranoid conspiracy theorists; if they can't see you, they'll assume you're working against them. The longer you're away, the more this suspicion grows.

The exalted Marches are litter with so many dead bodies, they are literally get up to move them selves to a better spot. And emerald graves is just a hiding spot for refugees.

Dorian points out that before the civil war began, the Exalted Plains was a forest-like area (at least i'm pretty sure he says it was before the civil war)

Yep and now rage demons everywhere.
This is about as much "war" as I expect nobles to see. The actual fighting gets done by lesser people.anyways, my issue is that this is really the only time we see the civil war

The consensus acknowledges your amusing yet utterly useless contribution to this topic.
Your problem is as you said, you like direct approaches that end quickly. WEWH makes you stop, think and play a politician of sorts, so people who just like it get it done with have never liked this quest. It's understandable, but if you can look past all that, it's a really interesting quest, with many different outcomes and one in particular that can make you even more in power than Orlais.
I expected and wanted to play the political game.
Instead, I was running around searching for deer carvings.
Agree, mostly.
I think if the timer ticked down slower then it wouldn't be so bad. But I think being able to switch to Cole or Sera for stealth operations in the palace would have been better than the Inquisitor doing it himself. Also you should be able to tag out to The Iron Bull if you don't want to dance with Florianne.

Yes the Exalted plains did have lots of bodies, but the quests there were not really about the civil war. there were a couple, but like most quests they were fetch quests. The civil war should have impacted every area. You should see its toll and its affect, and why people might support Gaspard or Celene. You should see in doing so that many good people support both sides, just as much as many horrible people. You should see their good points and their negative points.
Yet you don't. really.

Actually it was about the civil war. it was about the after math. Your not running trench to trench but your still dealing with the war in some way. you're dealing with the results.

Which can gain you the power over Orlais, and I like building the Inquisition's power. But unless you want the work together ending or to reunite the lady lovers, you need only 1 Halla and then you can go off and do as you please. Heck even the Garden is pointless unless you bring Sera for the Red Jenny quest, you need to collect all the coins or just want to see Varric flocked by his fans. Lol
In the end all you need is evidence against Gaspard and Briala and there's no statues needed for that after the one you use when you climb up to the library.
It's a matter of taste, or subjectivity. Certain things are objective perhaps, but overall liking/disliking a certain mission is fairly subjective, I believe. I can certainly respect an opinion where someone disagrees.
Personally, it was probably my favorite mission in the game, certainly my favorite main story mission. For a multitude of reasons. Loved the exploring, loved the story.
PALACE INTRIGUE.
Cheers.
You have terribly misinterpreted the value of Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts. It does suffer from some bad execution, yes, but you've just made a fool out of yourself from what you've just said.
If you want to see what such sort of mission should look like - play...nope, not the Kasumi's mission (ME2), not MotA(DA2), and not even Citadel casino(MEh3).
Play 'Lady Boyle party' mission from 'Dishonored':
- f!ing number of ways to even enter the party (I know 3, possibly more)
- variable main target NPC
-- many ways to figure it, and an option not even to bother
- number of ways to complete the mission ('complete', not 'fail') from harmless non-lethal full stealth\diplomacy to brutal massacre
-- each way with possible variations and paths.
- and it's an Action\FPS with stealth
Now compare with:
- the only way to enter, regardless of the Inq class, race and total current Inq score
- Inq 'discreetly' climbing up the garden fence in front of the public
- stealthy 'deft-hands' assassin-rogue that is forced to search for f!ng keys and statues
-- I mean.. halla statues. Can you imagine an idiot that (un\)locks his bedroom\library with 5 statues?...
- brutal Qunari warrior forced to play it their way (dance with the Absolutely-Not-the-Evil-Lady included)
- and its a GOTY RPG
I love how the DA2 DLC felt like it was prepping us for DAI. Lol love that DLC so much!
Yeah, great, but should I remind you that DA2 DLC had 2(TWO) different ways to enter the Vault?
Other than the limited halla statues and the trellis being in open view I quite like the Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts quest but there's definitely room for improvement. Like selecting then playing as a companion to do the solo searching or using one of the areas to explain about Celene, Gaspard and Briala.
Outside of Micheal's war table mission are Briala's eluvians even mentioned?

Doesn't matter to me. I just enjoy playing all the games and DLC and honestly I'm finding people's issues with DAI becoming more petty with each passing day. I laugh and try to be optimistic with my replies, but I'm growing tired of it. Not this thread, since I understand the OP's frustrations based on their preferred style of gaming, but everywhere else, especially the Feedback Thread. I like these games, and sure they have flaws, but they are still wonderful games with great moments and lots of fond memories for me. I appreciate what I'm given, despite it's not perfect.
And if my comment offends anyone, I apologize, but I just feel it finally needed to be said.
I can't find the exact quote at the moment, but Gaider said that they wanted to give the Inquisitor an option to pick out a dress for the event, but that it didn't work out in the end due to some difficulties. I'll try and find the quote.

The only thing I really hated about this quest was having to climb up a wall in front of the entire garden party.
Talk about immersion breaking......
I laughed out loud.
But jump on a table and you lose approval. Lol

This is actually something I wanted to add to the first post but forgot. Nice catch. Why not use Cole? Provided you recruited him. Sure, he's a bit spooked by the crowd but he can read peoples's minds, make people forget him or not see him in the first place. He would have been perfect for the wondering in the palace parts and would have reduced some of the annoyances. Alternatively, have Sera disguised as a servant, or other companion.

^ I like this human. He understands.
Being able to role-play a character is important. I like to get into the character's mind. For example, with a human noble Inquisitor from the Free Marches I would be more inclined to get involved in the Grand Game. May even end up liking it. But my Qunari mercenary? Not so much.

Yes. DA-I has it's flaws, some big ones I would say, but there are good aspects too, overall it's not a bad game.
But to stay on topic and balance things out a bit maybe I should list some of the things I did like about Wicked Hearts and Wicked Minds. The palace art-style was spot on, better than I had imagined when reading The Masked Empire. Empress Celene looked simply stunning, I was really surprised. Briala looked nice too. Gaspard was different than I pictured him (older looking dude with a long fuzzy beard, I must have played too much DAO), he really looked imposing and lord like. Nicely done. The music was top notch too.
