During the "Champion of the Just" mission you meet up with the loathsome Abernache.

As someone who prefers to play as an Elf (most often Dalish) i get rather insulted when he thinks it funny to mention the invasion of the dales to murder the elves. Quite apart from the fact that i really hate Orlais' political games and their belief that they are better then anyone else. He then thinks its amusing to mention the invasion of the Dales to the templar commander after the flag ritual.

You are given the option of doing the the Flag ritual or not.

If you do the ritual he dies.

If you refuse to do the ritual he lives.

In my personal opinion and the fact that i am in most cases a Dalish elf i am more then happy to let him die.

I am curious as to wether other people think he deserves to live or die.

PS. most forums say that there is no other effect if he lives or dies, does anyone know if there is any other effect than him just dying?

Thanks :)

If you save the soldiers in the Fallow Mire, you can order the captured Avvar to serve Abernache (if he lives) and they'll have a few war table missions.

Hahahahaaaa... (he annoys the heck out of me, but in the end it became one of my favourite moments in DAI)

My choice was:
1. Keep him alive (I did it by accident) always remain aloof around him.
2. Rescue the soldiers at Fallow Mire.
3. Assign the Avvar Chieftain to Abernach during judgement.

You'll get a War Table mission after that.

The message I'd like to send to him was:
1. Mess with me and I'll make your life miserable
2. Revenge can be a b*tch. Hope you enjoy the cameraderie with your new friend.

Ps: I play as Dalish too

thanks for replays :) i didn't know you could assign them the avvar to him, though it might be worth noting that if you exile them you send them to tervinter with all the weapons they can carry and you get war table missions from that too.

The flag ritual is a complete waste of f***ing time, in this regard he is completely correct. So he tends to survive when I do Champions of the Just.

I let him live. Taking offense to some petty statements is ludicrous. Also, having him alive opens up some more war table missions and new choices.

Erh.. "Great" may be the wrong choice of words.. "Infamous" seems more accurate.

Honestly there should be a convention outlawing their usage

It's not like I think he deserves to be killed or that I play that mission in a way specifically to kill him off, but his arrogance and the profound disrespect it caused him to show to the faithful champions of Andraste didn't make my Inquisitor inclined to miss him.

@Jedi Master: yeah.. kinda see what you mean. Next PT I'll just off him out, though honestly the flag thingy is pretty much a useless thing for my Dalish Inqi, LoL. Any repercussion if he died?

Either you haven't finished DA:I or it's about to get much worse for you. Either way, I'm sorry, and I hope you come to terms with it.

I'll admit, it was a little fantasy racist to call (Dalish) elves warmongering, child-killing, xenophobic, bigoted, hypocritical, backstabbing, assholic barbarians, but we were completely justified in retrospect.

Well, he is an arrogant bastard, but he did help you, if you stop to think about it.

He bullies his way into the Templar Order because he knows there's something seriously wrong. So he helps you get by all the stupid ritual of introductions and get straight to business. He helps you by demanding to ask directly to the superior officers. He makes sure the Inquisitor is not detained and forced to leave empty-handed.

Sure, he does that because, as an Orlesian noble, he himself wants to know why the templars aren't doing anything to solve this crisis and save his homeland, but this is a matter of interests that coincide. You want to investigate the Templar Order and he wants to know why aren't they doing anything. Win win.

Sometimes, when you run an organisation, you need allies like that. People who kick the front door, help you get to the bottom of the matter and get things moving. So I don't usually kill Abernache because I believe he can be very useful, especially if you think the Inquisition is still relatively young and not assertive enough to exert any authority.

Which doesn't mean he might not turn against me in the future, of course. But, priorities first.

Jesus Christ, just realised I sound a lot like Morrigan. Using people and such.

The mission's slightly more fun if he gets killed, in my opinion.

the flag ritual can't be that bad, besides you get a little loot if you look around :)

Yeah, but in hindsight we have to realize that was literally a stall tactic by a demon.

Also I personally found its execution a bit awkward and immersion-breaking anyway so I prefer to leave it behind as soon as possible.

Abernache Over Under is the greatest war table mission in the game. Therefore he must always be saved and paired with Morvan! That mission is simply a thing of beauty.
