Hi Im currently playing DA Inquis on normal & I always have the same problems with dragons, although I can kill them it just happens that whoever im controlling is having to do the lions share of the damage usually 80% or so. Melee attackers like my rogue or warrior when they attack the dragon legs/body head etc swing away & do moves but very rarely register a hit it dont matter what part they attack I get this same problem on all dragons.

I have controlled solis & send my 3 melees into fight dragon to see what happens & they attack all the time but very rarely do any damage, when I take control can just rock up & hit as normal.

Anyone else have this problem fighting dragons.

I haven't really noticed the problem except that since the dragon move around quite a lot I expect that melee characters will have a certain amount of misses whereas the mages will not. Archers still need to aim but the target is huge so they will most often hit. I find that my melee characters do inflict a really big chunk of damage though. IB is obligatory on dragon hunt with my reaver Inquisitor =). They then have After-fight in the Heralds rest =).

I notice sometimes my melee companions just stand there (not stunned). Also a wierd glitch I got was companions running past my character over and over again.. never reaching the dragon. :P

The first is caused by not setting a target. Use the "Attack my target" command, or, click on the limb or head you want attacked. It's all about the gold cross (or skull, if you are under-levelled). If you don't set a target, whatever your character is aiming for has a white cross/reticle. You have to set that as a target for other characters if you want them to do something. That's assuming you have all of your characters AI set to Follow Controlled Character -- they are following you, but you are not giving them a target.

You can also use Tactical to give each party member a different target.

If you have their AI set to something else, that might be the problem.

The second is caused by you (the controlled character) being too far away from the enemy. There is a distance your party can travel away from you before the game thinks they are stuck/left behind and teleports them back to you. If that range is shorter than the distance to the enemy, you get that effect.

First, check your game settings to make sure you have damage numbers being shown for the whole party. One of the options is to show the controlled character's numbers only, which may explain why you don't see anyone else hit.

Assuming that is not the problem, no, I don't see that versus dragons when I have character AI set to Follow Controlled Character, unless I don't set a target for them. Those melee party members that don't have a target set, or, that have the head set, which they can't reach, stand around waiting for something to do. As long as you set a limb -- I prefer hind legs for Flanking bonus damage -- as the target for all to attack (use Attack my Target command), melee characters will close on that limb and attack. On PC, you can click on a limb or the head as the target. You can also use Tactical cam to set targets for each party member.

One other thing to check -- what's your armor penetration? Dragons have armor and if your base damage on melee weapons is below the armor level, you won't get any damage! That would explain why Solas's attacks hit (elemental damage ignores armor) but melee doesn't.

PapaCharlie makes good points, one I'd like to elaborate on.  I think you're on PC, so set everyone to attack a single foreleg with the crosshairs "attack my target" command.  Pour it on.  After a few attacks, tab through the possible targets, and one of the other legs probably has a ridiculously low armor rating.  Have Inq switch targets to that one and again, have the party join in.  It REALLY helps to be able to have a dragon with an AC of 8.  Also, does anyone know if there's a creature in-game that resists the damage from the jar of bees?  I know they might not panic, but I'm pretty sure no creature is immune to physical damage.  I pretty much lob them at everything bigger than I am.

Regarding OP, I don't know if it works any other way, since unless you've reset your tactics to less stamina/mana reserve, the companions will cut off long before the player when using abilities.  I usually scale stamina reserves down to 20, or even minimum, for companions, while increasing mana to 50 for mages.  The reason I increase it for mages is so if I have to jump in, there's some mana to play with when I get there.  I really love it when I don't even have to see the 2nd wave from a rift.

I've had a really fun day killing half the dragons in Thedas, and discovered an important thing not to do with the Ferelden Frostback.  Nukem Inq is a lightning KE with the party built to do the most damage possible in the least amount of time, relying on passives and armor for nearly all protection.  I've been having so much fun blasting everything in sight, I didn't get around to the Ferelden Frostback until level 20, with Inq, Blackwall, Bull and Varric.  I made the mistake of sending it to the small ledge, right after the first wave of dragonlings, with only 3000 hp.  When it came off, I just froze it.  It's not scripted to die on the floor.  It blinks to the ledge and everything from the area, including the red templars, appears from nowhere.  Fine, great fight, but the loot from the dragon was at valley floor level, in the middle of the high ledge where it's supposed to die.  Completely inaccessible.  My moral of the day is sometimes it's better to take it easy.

hmm, that is odd.  I have killed the Ferelden Frostback on the floor before.  I didn't experience that bug.  I looted normally.  But I did kill him before he took flight at all.  Very fast.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was a glitch of some kind, because the game glitched again later when I was doing Rocky Rescue.  I cleared a group at range from an overpass before any of them had entered combat mode, and the group winked out of existence and I blinked back to the start of the overpass, with all the buffs I built up during combat, but no loot.  They did die normally when I walked in and killed them properly.  It really doesn't impact play much, but it's probably a bug.  The effects of my spells were visible, but not their targets, and afterwards, the scene shifted location entirely, without doing any kind of movement, as in now you're here, and now you're there.  It was really weird, but no harm done.

I always have my warriors set follow themselves.  So Cass follows Cass and Bull follows Bull and Blackwall Blackwall.  Then I have Varric and Sera follow the warrior.  I usually leave my mages be to cast AoE spells from afar.  I typically play as a KE mage or a melee fighter so I can go in and soften up a leg and draw the dragon's ire while Cass does what Cass does and Sera rains down arrows and Dorian does his AoE stuff.

You don't need special tricks, all you need is understand mechanics, week and strong aspects of every class.

Make sure you upgrade your potions and have the best gear possible. Tweak the stats, runes, item slots and everything well. Make sure your companions are efficiently specced.

I killed Highland Ravager in 15 seconds with Varric+Mighty Offense Potions on Nightmare (I wasn't solo but controlled him) thanks to Hail of Arrows. Popped it, spammed my skills, and it was dead. I was surprised myself.

The fights are only challenging in early levels, when you don't have much gear or the upgrades to potions. Once you start getting them, they became pretty easy.
