So, after Quick Jim made his thread on the EM Drive I wondered why we didn't have a thread to talk about all the other things involving space outside of Earth. Figured I'd make one and see where it goes.

Starting off,

NASA's gonna be talking about a mission to Europa today and the talk will be live streamed. Goal of the mission is to find out if Europa being what it is can sustain life so they'll reveal several instruments they'll be using in this endeavor. :)

Very cool. Population problems would be a things of the past if we can live on other worlds...Honestly I'd love for NASA to look into Terra forming technology. Can't expect the mars colony to be restricted to only a dome forever.

So according to the description the mission will involve close fly-bys of Europa within a period of three years. Wondering what they'll discover in that time.

Speaking about the live stream,

When is NASA gonna find monoliths or blue chicks? It's been 57 years surely they at least got a temp on it.

One of my fav movies to be honest.  I liked it better than the original.  I know, it is sacrilegious to say such a thing.

Thanks for 3001 reference.

I didn't even know those other books existed and I have not actually read the books at all to my embarrassment.  I shall have to buy the whole collection on Amazon and add them to my reading list for this summer.

Sorry to get the thread a bit off topic, back to the topic at hand.

I love space exploration, the Cassini probe mission, the mind blowing voyageurs that are still racing towards interstellar space, even this recent mission to deploy a test solar sail.  All very cool.

I just wish our planet could take all the money they spend on military crap and use it to boost other world exploration.

If 2010 had something going for it it was the mystery of finding out what happened to Bowman and HAL. It felt a bit preachy because of the Cold War aspect but not distractingly so. However, I wish they had taken more time exploring the Discovery One.

As mentioned, 2010 is based on the second book of Clarke's A Space Odyssey. There's also a second series called A Time Odyssey but I found nowhere near as engaging as the first.

Humanity isn't smart enough to do that. When we first arrived on the existence-scene, we used violence as the platform for our advancement and this is why so much of our everyday going ons revolve around violence and violent behavior(violent sports like MMA, Boxing and Pro Wrestling, the appearance of having skill in combat being an attractive feature, war being the solution to humanity's mass issues, problems being resolved in combat, the admiration for weapons designed to kill, etc etc).

Before all that war money goes in other directions, humanity needs to come together, realize the problem starts at the very core, and needs to figure out how to replace violence as our platform of advancement and what to replace it with. It could be either a really simple job or a monumental task but its pretty much a prerequisite.

If war funds were put towards environmental advancements for Earth itself and our ventures away from our planet, many a fantastic thing could happen. However, war funds have helped us along with advancements as well. So there'd have to be some serious debating on how to effectively change what it means to be human before such a massive change would be underway.

But hey, I'm up for it.

Bah! Mars is to mainstream.  B)

Everyone wants to go to Mars, a planet smaller than ours, and an atmosphere that has literally boiled away. Why do we think that the Red planet is so suitable for colonization again? Even the Martians wanted to get off world and invade us.

Venus on the other hand, is almost the exact same size as us, and has Earth like conditions in the upper atmosphere; enough so that the BioWare trope of wearing just a breather mask would actually be feasible. Colonies there would have to stay aloft in the upper reaches of the atmosphere, meaning that we would have a real world cloud city.

Plus Venus is where all the ladies come from.

Bunz would simply see space as a giant public restroom for him to take selfies.

I can see it for the majesty it is.

You do realize even after we branch out into the cosmos and establish colonies(pipe dream), we will still be killing each other en masse.

The Killzone series has a really great backstory that illustrates this.
