It might be a warning signal that the Reapers are coming!

But not really.

Off all of these the WOW-signal is the most intriguing. And they can´t even find the location from where it comes. Has anyone ever tried to decrypt it?

Not that I know of...

However that other signal they talked about.   Had a pattern, a mathematical pattern. Yet they write it off.

That is sad news..

On the other hand the Plutonians may not want to be spied on :D

At least everything's gonna be back to normal and the mission will continue as planned.

Yeah, I think it is because of the numbers. Distance and power to create it, most likely something like a black hole. Though, if a civilization is behind it then we should keep very quiet. Not that they would ever come to see us, unless they can travel faster than light. That is.

Unless it's intentionally devised to be "decrypted", like the plaque on Voyager, it's impossible.

Given an unknown message in an unknown form in an unknown language, it's not possible to derive basically anything at all.

It would take a hefty amount of side information about the originators to get an angle for a try.

What you can do, is try to rule out that the signal can have natural causes, and that's what they think they very likely have done about the WOW-signal.

I don't know what you're thinking of, but the likely reason is that it can have natural causes.

Agreed. Even assuming a non-sentient source, how would we decode it? It would be a signal that we don't have a machine to interpret the signal and, even if we did, we are assuming it is in a format humans even CAN understand (not every species of alien will use sound to communicate, but perhaps light or another form of energy).

It is much more efficient use of time to try to find a natural source rather than speculate the nearly unlimited amounts of ways the signal code be encoded.

True, still trying something is more than doing nothing. Especially with the super computers these days.

We wouldn't even know if we found the right answer, though. That's the problem.

The Glartarx protoclors of Kepler 10-c communicate through oscillating forms of infrared radiation and send a radio signal that any intelligent being who uses any form of infrared radiation to communicate could decode in a heartbeat. Except we have no idea how to use infrared radiation to communicate, nor would we have a process to convert it to a meaningful form of communication even if we did.

The mistake is that we assume alien life will think or communicate in any way CLOSE to what we do... which is very, very unlikely. We likely wouldn't be able to figure out another alien's message without any context anymore than an ant could read the Declaration of Independence.

Winter is Coming

Dammit, the sun hired GRRM to write the next couple of cycles, and sh*t's gonna hit the fan! :o

If the predictions are correct, it will have a significant impact on how we address a lot of the current predicaments we have in economic/environmental terms.

All that worry about man-caused climate change and the sun proves that it can do more with a 'slight fluctuation' than we could hope to do in 1,000 years

It really does make you wonder why sun worship isn't more common.

You pray to a god and it doesn't answer your prayer, you are left pondering the deeper mysteries of a divine omnipotent being who creates hardship and pain in its creation.

You pray to the sun and if it doesn't come up, you're dealing with some serious $hit.

Well for all intents and purposes, the Sun is the center of our little universe.

Unless someone can develop FTL travel, we are looking at our solar system being the only thing we can reliably colonize.
