I would guess not but I'm not quite sure. I'm no astronomer, though I've done a bit of research on it in the past.

No. Suns are too small in that scale to show up as dots. The dots are just concentrations of light sources (like suns and/or gas clouds).

There are about 1000 billions of stars there (in Andromeda).

 

Stars takes many shapes (at least in size, color and life cycle). There are many like the sun, but there are also stars that are much, much larger.

Compare it to the three Hubble wallpapers I've put.

 

Also if Andromeda is like that it's certainly ugly!

No, it's not a fake. Depending what lenses are used at the time you will get different colors or different pieces of the color spectrum. The Eagle Nebula isn't purple, but there are pictures of it that are. Why? Because certain wavelengths were filtered out.
