Yeah, that was pretty damn hysterical, but you can hardly blame them. That's basically what the first observations of Mars sparked... this idea that there were canals and a whole civilization waiting for us. And sadly, not from the cranks. The guy who built the Lowell observatory thought this.

We're still hoping for this sort of thing today. We've sent messages to exoplanets we believe harbor life after all.

Of course, it'd be horrible. But from up there it looks like a big puddle you'd want to jump into. Crazy how beautiful it is up there, and we'll never know just how beautiful unless we somehow someday end up on it.
according to the guy who swandived in the name of redbull, the descent feels like nothing. Until you start burning probably. Its not so romanticized as youve put it.

I don't know if you had the right kind of spacesuit or heat proofing you could do a sub orbital skydive .. You'd have to get the exact perfect angle of descent though..

This is true. Kirk did it in the cut footage of Star Trek Generations... Only they had him jump out a shuttle in low orbit. The suit had tons of ceramic tiles on it.

This has got to be one of my favorite images of all time.

I can't help but sit there and think about the intelligent beings that we will never know, on a world that we will never visit, in a galaxy that we can barely even see, that look up to the night sky just as I do, and think 'what's out there?'
We'll never know for sure, and neither will they, and that makes me kinda sad.

Signs of Alien Life Will Be Found by 2025, NASA's Chief Scientist Predicts
by Mike Wall, Space.com Senior Writer | April 07, 2015 04:50pm ET
Humanity is on the verge of discovering alien life, high-ranking NASA scientists say.
"I think we're going to have strong indications of life beyond Earth within a decade, and I think we're going to have definitive evidence within 20 to 30 years," NASA chief scientist Ellen Stofan said Tuesday (April 7) during a panel discussion that focused on the space agency's efforts to search for habitable worlds and alien life.
"We know where to look. We know how to look," Stofan added during the event, which was webcast live. "In most cases we have the technology, and we're on a path to implementing it. And so I think we're definitely on the road."

I totally disagree, we will get there. I don't know how or when, but it will happen. Our time on this world has been but a flicker, less than one percent, but we have overcome obstacles that were thought to be impossible in a tiny almost infinitesimal amount of time. This has got to be one of my favorite images of all time.

Not so long ago( according to the scientific community ) Dark Matter, Dark Energy and the Higgs Boson didn't exist, but now days we know they do. It's the old God of the gaps argument. There will come a time when someone, usually someone ridiculed by the scientific community for their extreme or out there theories figures it out.
At least that's what I tell myself, because if humanity doesn't get off earth in the next 150 years were probably going to destroy ourselves.

Do you think on some distant world people are also sitting on their computers and thinking "there must be life out there" and posting on their internet? Assuming technology follows similar evolutions then why the hell not hey?

Assuming that technology followed a similar path then potentially. It'd be different than the internet but if it allowed creatures of a world to communicate amongst one another instantly than its possible they would wonder if others could too.

Well whatever name they give it it could be a similar thing technically. Assuming for a moment that all technology evolves in a similar fashion to organic life.... Or possibly totally alien tech and inorganic life.

Well I imagine life is more than just what we know it to be. There's got to be more out there that is completely outside of our comprehension.

Makes me wonder if we'll even recognize life if we find it. Or if we already have and still haven't realized that it IS life, but outside of our comprehension so we think we're looking at inanimate objects.
