The size of the universe that we think we know of is huge. Crazy stuff.

On a slightly related note, I've probably seen the original Cosmos a hundred times. Sometimes I just keep discs in and fall asleep to it. Relaxing show.

Makes me wonder if we'll even recognize life if we find it. Or if we already have and still haven't realized that it IS life, but outside of our comprehension so we think we're looking at inanimate objects.

That's quite possible, at least i think so.

It would be very interesting if that were the case.

I wish those in the Andromeda section were more interested in this sort of thing given the build up in interest with the game.

So much to learn.

What a sunrise might look like from the surface of a desert word orbiting the massive red giant star Betelgeuse, about two times further out than Neptune is to our sun. The planet itself is pure Sci Fi, since we haven't discovered Betelgeuse's planets yet (if it still has some), but its still a pretty cool vid.

Speaking of Betelgeuse, depending on the time of year you can see it clearly in the night sky with the naked eye even from densely populated urban areas. It is part of the constellation Orion, and unlike many of the stars in the night sky that appear white or bluish in color, it has a distinctive red hue.

Betelgeuse is the star that makes up the left shoulder of Orion in that image, though in the picture it appears more yellow than red.

A size comparison between Betelgeuse and our sun, as well some other stars:

Betelgeuse is an old star that will end it's life as a supernova probably sometime within the next 100,000 years. It is far enough away from Earth that life here won't be affected, but it will produce an impressive sight in the night skies. When the light from the supernova reaches Earth it will be the brightest thing in the night sky, brighter than the moon, and will be visible even in daylight.

I wish it could blow right now? have blown right now so that we can see it now?

I wish there was another star that goes up like that and we can see it.   Although it would technically be in the past as you say......

Hey light form our sun takes 8 minutes to get here.  How long for radio signals?

I was thinking if you could have something orbit the sun and looking at Earth wouldn't you be seeing events 8 minutes in the past?

Also if radio takes 21 minutes from Earth to Mars why can't we put relays around the solar system to speed that up?

What are you asking for, something to speed up transmission speeds?

No but wouldn't a system of relays shorten the time from 21 minutes?
