That's a pretty good point honestly about Alistair, but would an Alistair that was more kingly, regal, or otherwise mature/intense be such a bad thing?
I don't mind cliffhanger romances if there is a way to get my LI back in a DLC for example. I think drama and angst can make romances better if there is a way to get a happy ending for the romance. Although it's also very important how that happy ending can be achived. I liked Fenris romance very much even though he leaves you and he has a lot of issues but you can get him back and I liked the the reunion scene very much. I also liked Alistair romance very much but DR was a little bit too much for me. I still don't like it but on the other hand I'm glad that it exists because that way I can get a happier ending to that romance in DAO at least. Even though you can get a happy ending to Blackwall romance I don't like how that is done because you'll have to forgive him in his judgement and you can't deal with his past and how he left you.
Well if you harden him, he does want to be king, and will ask you to pick him over Anora. I guess that's what people mean about all the different hoops you have to jump through with him, though.
Sure, but to me this is people complaining they can't have their cake and eat it too without meta-gaming. They want to keep Alistair *and* they want him to be king. It's 100% possible to keep him with no meta-gaming. You just have to listen to him.
To me this is world's apart from say Anders who blows up the Chantry no matter what you do or Solas who runs off no matter what.
