Whats the point of showing those "I can solo perilious" videos? Bragging? "OMG I can solo perilious because I have IMBA gear and I invested tons of time with promotions". At some point its not even a challenge. Just shows how much time you invested.

Because sometimes due to the volatility of damp servers and inconsistent host connections, soloing is the lesser of two evils between extracting by yourself while you wait for people to join or wait in a public lobby for indefinite amounts of time for people to ready up, etc. Less exp and less gold for a solo run on perilous is better than a 4 man extraction on routine. I'm not saying it's the most exciting and bolstering way of playing damp, but it's an option.

As far as your questions as to why op posted the video, he pretty much answered them all in regards to damp unless they were rhetorical to begin with.

It's not so much about bragging although it almost always seems to come off that way.  (Well maybe sometimes they are bragging).  Solo demonstrations are a good way to show working builds.  Not everyone will be able to solo even if they are running an identical build, because like you said it's gear and promotion based.  It's up to the audience to follow the guide to the letter or make a few tweaks of their own.  Believe or not there are a lot of people watching "how to" guides, not just in this game, but everything else in general like "How to change your flat tire" or "How to cook this recipe".  Youtube should give you an idea how popular "how to" guides are, and people will always have differing opinions about those guides.  Either it works for you or it doesn't.

 

Other people's time spent playing isn't really something we should get angry/frustrated about since some people just have more time on their hands than others.  The person with more time spent playing will almost always have better gear/stats than someone who plays less and this is true with every game that has gear that needs unlocking/acquiring.  The unlimited stats in DAMP is a major, probably game-breaking design flaw for sure, but then most games have their own set of flaws.  Personally, I think I only ever truly watched 3 guides for DAMP.  First was Kjubaran's Katari solo vs Demons, some other dude's Big Bully Katari build, and Shelled's Reaver solo vs all factions, because those were the classes I had the most trouble with at the time.  Picked up good tips, some I decided to follow, some not so much.

A perilous solo speedrun with the Avvar by PenguinFetish, the fastest solo that is currently recorded. Stats are 36 constitution, 49 willpower and 44 cunning.

 

The aim of this video is to prove that you do not need strategy, positioning or any sort of 'skill' providing you have good gear and weapons. This solo is quite literally charging into every group as quickly as possible and spamming abilities. Zero skill or even knowledge of mechanics are needed other than two functional hands.

That's pretty much why people started feeling such animosity towards players with high promotions and BIS gear.  Without all the douchebaggery, a high promotion player is just another guy doing his own thing in his own lobby with his own friends, and chances of people actually running into them is pretty low because of region locks or the lobby mostly set to private.  Many people need guides but they can definitely go without the insults.

Hi all, just wanted to say that Drasca's build for the Avarr (listed in the resource library section) is superb. Rather than the greatsword, I use the Maul of the Dragon. Whether that is his own build creation or someone else's I am not bothered. The fact is that he took the time, effort, and trouble in posting all that data on builds, is ... well certainly very helpful in my humble opinion.

Eh. Skill has clearly become overrated. The point of a game is not to be difficult to learn, the point of a game is to be enjoyable. DAMP clearly succeeds just fine, so instead of focusing on changing core mechanics to make it inherently more reflex-based and/or cursor-accurate to master (at least I assume that's what you want when you say 'skill'), let's focus on more content. Like new game modes, difficulties, enemies, and other options (friendly fire pls Luke).

 

Oh, and what's all this rubbish about the guy in the video using other people's builds? People don't own builds. Do you seriously believe that you're the first person to use that build? I hope you realise that 99% of players haven't so much as heard that these forums exist, let alone read them, let alone post on them, let alone make videos about 'their' builds. And even if you actually were the first to use that build, and the first to publically announce the build (aka share the build), what on earth makes that yours? Are you going to sue others for using it after you've shared it on a public forum?

 

I appreciate anyone who puts in effort to selflessly help others out. But I hope you don't expect intellectual copyright over 'your' level-up pattern for a specific character in the multiplayer segment of a video game. I hope you realise how ridiculous and self-absorbed the notion sounds.

 

And we get to my point. This is a video game, not your bloody job.
