I saw an ad suggesting that you could adopt a manatee for Dad for Father's Day (June 21), and I had to smile. No, not for my Dad. LOL. My actual Dad has passed away but my unofficially adopted Dad is dropping hints about a new barbeque grill to all concerned... What are some good gifts? Memorable or unusual gifts?

You could always go the tie route. I haven't gotten a Fathers Day gift in almost a decade (My Dad passed away as well) but usually just being quite for about 2 hours to let him take a nap was enough for him lol. That and a nice glass of wine.

I say the moment you see him. You give him a nice punch in the jaw. The way true men hug!

I just had a memory pop up of my birth Dad allowing me, as a very small girl, to roll up his hair in pink sponge rollers to give him an "Elvis" hair style.
He was an especially tolerant man. :D

Later on, he could be over-protective, but he meant well...

All four of my Dad's children are gathering this weekend. It will be the first time we've done that since Mom died.

As a small gift, I'm putting together a basket of Belgian treats (Speculaas/Speculoos, Stella Artois, Baisers de Malmedy, and some chocolate).

I don't know who my father is, and my parental uncle isn't someone I'm emotionally close to, so this day has always been problematic to me. I negotiate with it by calling my uncle but not really going any further. On the other hand, if I become a parent, I'll care more about every day being Father's Day (as in trying to foster a positive enough relationship that I don't need a specific day to pay tribute to my family role). A few nice things throughout the year definitely trumps one very nice thing on one day; same position with my birthday, Christmas, etc.

I'd say it would depend on what he needs and who he is.

Like say, if he has a broken watch, get him a new watch. If he needs a new suit, get him a new suit. If you know he always eats cheap, try getting him something exotic. Just try to not get him something that can cause lots of grief (big pets, computers, etc).

P.S. I personally don't care about father's/mother's day. I fail to see why one day is special to another. Everyday's father's/mother's day!

Why just settle for a barbecue grill?  What's better than the equipment to MAKE your own grill?  :D

Speaking of grills. Building your own grill has a certain charm to it. Unless your dad isn't the kind of guy who would want to get his hands dirty.
