I have notes, lots of notes and story ideas.  But I have a problem putting the words down.

16 pages into my story which I wanted to end this year and make copies to send out to publishers but for the last 4 weeks I just can't seem to put words down.  I am getting ideas and recording them on a voice recorder but they're just not flowing into pages.

Anyone here write who knows what this is like can help?

I don't write but this seems similar to my own creative endeavors. The best advice I can give is to just step away from what you're doing for awhile. Trying to force out ideas isn't going to help you.

I would suggest not forcing yourself and making sure other matters are sorted out. Try to look at other sources of entertainment, maybe it'll help give you an idea for how you can have your ideas flow into the story.

yeah but I am getting ideas. At random times I'll get what sounds like an amazing idea and record it. But it stops there......

In almost all creative arts, the biggest hurdle is that first step

Yeah but you're not putting them to paper. The same happens to me when I can't put melodies in my head into the music how I want. Unfortunately you're too deep to scrap what you're working on. So taking a break completely away for a bit might help you.

This. Write what comes to you. Even if it's a sentence, even it's something unrelated. Just write it out.

I write little serials and short stories and one thing that really helps me, even if it sounds weird, is talking to myself. If I'm having trouble figuring out how a certain piece of dialogue is supposed to go. I talk out the conversation out loud to myself. Or if I'm having trouble setting up a set or details, I'll describe what's in my mind out loud.

Also another thing that I used to cringe at. Don't be married to your outline, and don't be afraid to scrap it and start from square one. If the ideas just aren't coming or it feels like it's a forced effort (besides just buckling down to write) don't stick with it. Cut your loses and move on. If it doesn't work, then it just doesn't work.

Hey thank you!!!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Just out of the blue it happened. I started adding to my character notes and added descriptions for my alien races and planets.   I just let the words flow.

Drugs and/or alcohol might help.

If that doesn't help then watch some modern American TV shows. Get good and angry then write up some nihilistic piece about how the world ended following the death of artistic merit. Write about how people turn all medieval and started becoming mindless drones who work to death and gain very little back. Write about how Jesery Shore ruined your last relationship.

Finally, after you cool down from your daily dose of Rage™. You can read through this and pick out the bits and pieces you like and incorporate it into whatever you are writing.

Glad to hear things are going better! Although, I'm not sure... it sounds like you are adding more to your notes, instead of the actual story? I may be wrong there.

Nothing wrong with notes, but the end product has to come into being at some point. That's always the toughest part. Many story tellers are amazing at creating worlds, creatures and concepts in their fiction, but then fail to find a way to execute them into a story that is actually gripping. So hope the best for you! Keep on plugging away - writing is equal parts destruction of your ideas as it is creation of them.

Watch a lot of porn.

It won't cure it.

But at least you'll be productive.
