when promoting a character you get +1 willpower, constitution etc.
What exactly do these give you?

- Willpower gives you +Attack and Magic Defense
- Constitution gives you +Health & Physical Defense
- Cunning gives you +Critical Hit Chance & Ranged Defense
*turns around to even regularer regulars*
...ain't that the truth, fellas?

Willpower: 0.5 attack and 0.5 magic defence
Cunning: 0.5 crit chance and 0.5 ranged defence
The values except health are percentages.

The devil is in the details. There are caps to defense, gear and passives that max it out, and limits to what +attack actually benefits, and some passives guarantee critical chance. . . so for some kits and abilities these promotions are pretty useless, or less meaningful.
Defense maxes out at 80% Critical chance maxes out at 100%
Sword and Shield Warriors can get Turn the Bolt early on (+50% ranged defense) and all S&S warriors (templar/legionaire) have Shields with 30% front defense, which with Turn the Bolt maxes total ranged defense (against arrows) to 80% . . . leaving ranged defense and cunning pretty useless against arrows from the front.
Attack % only affects basic attacks, and abilities listed "weapon damage" but not "bonus damage". For example Longshot and Power Chord both benefit from "bonus damage" but attack % does not affect this damage.
So you may hit 2k damage with long shot, but an additional 1% attack power won't mean an additional 1% total damage for this ability. The actual benefit is far less.
Critical chance can be guaranteed with certain conditions like sleep and panic with Deathblow / Mercy Killing conditions, Knife in the Shadows (attack from stealth), Sneak attack / Opportunist (attack from flank) while these conditions can be consistently fulfilled. Warhorn, stealth, Fire Wall, Knock out Bomb, Shock-Weaken combo, to name a few.
So yes, these promotions give you tangible benefits gradually, but their actual benefit highly varies between kits, builds and abilities. The math behind it all is annoying work too (because of all of the time-consuming data gathering & testing involved)
