My issue is mostly with some of the dialogue. To me, it seemed that characters were constantly saying to Shepard things like "Your the only one who can defeat the Reapers.", "Your the only one who can defeat the Collectors.", "Your the only one who can unite the galaxy.", "Your the only one who can lead us." etc.

In most video games you play as the hero of something; whether your saving the galaxy, the country, the princess or anything else. I don't feel it is necessary to explicitly say "Your the only one who can save..." In fact, I feel part of a writers goal should be to downplay the narcissistic nature of video games.

That said, this did not come close to ruining the Mass Effect trilogy for me. It is my favorite series.

The Shepard worship made me cringe, there was so much of it that I swear that the entire thing was satire on Bioware's part, it wouldn't make sense any other way. Most video games are power fantasies, but Bioware took this to the extreme with Mass Effect. Other video games just put you in the role of a regular badass character who does some simple badass things, like Zaeed, but nope, Bioware decided that being Zaeed wasn't enough, they wanted the protagonist to be Space Jesus, someone who everything revolved around and everything would fall apart without.

I found myself facepalming numerous times during the trilogy when during a conversation, someone would randomly interject and remind everyone how important and vital  Shepard is, the most notorious example of this being on the shuttle with Anderson and Coates after you destroy the Reaper AA, and during a conversation with Anderson, James, if you take him, suddenly feels the need to step in a remind everyone that they're only here because of Space Jesus, our lord and saviour. If I could have turned around and slapped James I would have, it was so contrived.

Hopefully Bioware drop all that nonsense for ME4, otherwise going through the game and having everyone sucking the new protagonists dick is going to be painful.

Let's not forget "If we lose Shepard, humanity might well follow." -_-

Please don't remind me of that awful, awful line. It makes no sense whatsoever.

Oh come on, even a little unborn child's life depends upon Commander Shepard's input in ME1. Gene therapy or no gene therapy? And in ME3 everything was done with a click of a mouse during a planet survey! You could treat people like absolute dog sh*t and it didn't matter. You were loved. There was the cult of The Shepard. The writers even poked fun at it in the Stargazer scene.

And how can you say that you never feel that Shepard is the only one who can save the galaxy?

Spoiler

Everyone in the galaxy got a major case of stupid so that Shepard could solve their problem. If they didn't, they became a villain.

The Clone was also spot on when he pointed out the ridiculous of the whole cult thing, it makes no sense and shouldn't even be a thing, but we gotta make everyone dumb and/or blindly devoted to Shepard for reasons, and if they aren't either of those two things then they end up dead.

Bioware pls

And they want to call the ending art? I just finished Bioshock Infinite last night. That ending was artfully done and thought provoking. Granted there is a little handwavium in there, but not much. ME3 ending can't touch it. Alas Irrational Games is no more, but they went out on top with that one. That series is another one I'd like to see updated for next-gen.

Infinite's ending also generated a lot of irritation, head-canon "speculation", and dissection of plot holes from players.

One of the biggest reasons why the whole Project Lazarus thing should have been scrapped. Comas happen all the time. C'mon.

Seriously?? Bioshock is a serie for teenagers. Infinite is one of the worst of the trilogy. It doesn't lead you to really think. It's just writing based on echos. Yes you have to interpret the ending but no, that's not artfully done. It was done to be "cool" and it works on people who think that art is done to be cool. It's not the fact that there are speculation that make a writing artful, it's the thoughts the writing creates that make it artful. It has nothing to do with happy ending or not.

That it took them until Mass Effect 3 to get a handle on how the Renegade side of Mass Effect morality should be written.

I think Bioware is more artful for it's characters and small moments.

Even if I don't mind the ending, that isn't anything worth talking about. They've done better. Meeting Thane, just about every convo with Javik, Legion, TIM, and Jack...

The ME3 ending? Not so much. It's just something I'd rather get over with. Plus, it's a bit too expository now with the EC anyways. It's kind of a drag.

The level design is great though.

Uh, who is the "top" human after Udina kicks the bucket? Is it Hackett? Because the Alliance counsel is dead, Udina is dead, Anderson is back on Earth, Hackett is busy with overseeing the Project... Seriously, who is running the human show? The other races have their leaders (Matriarchs, Dalatrasses, Primarch, etc).

That's what I hated, not knowing who was the clear head of the humans.

None... but Shepard can comment on it somewhat with Allers.. saying humans can step up, leaders can rise.

Err... Paragon option at least.

I would guess Ambassador Dominic Osoba would take Udina's place though it doesn't happen in game.

The thing is with each individual world being reaped, I think the local leaders would be in charge. The would pass laws ordering people to cease hostilities and report to reaper processing plants.

Each world had its own resistance. Anderson led the one on Earth. Hackett was in command of the Allied fleets.... no  wait that was.... Commander Shepard.... because Shepard gave the order to attack. You'd think Hackett could have given Shepard a field promotion to at least Captain or Rear Admiral to do that, wouldn't you? I mean what kind of benefits are her baby going to have after the war? You know, the one she had with Liara? Not that things are going to be any better than Fallout 3 for a while given the decades it'll take to fix the mass relay

It's OK. You picked Synthesis. That baby probably doesn't have to worry what they eat anymore. I bet everyone's digestive systems turns into that contraption Doc Brown had in Back to the Future. "Mr Fusion".   ;)

I want Mordin Solus to show up in a Mako converted into a time machine to warn Shepard in 2183 that things are going to go terribly wrong.

I disliked how they slowly killed off the space exploration. In ME1 you could fly to planets and actually explore. In ME2 you could only scan planets for minerals which I hated. In ME3 you could barely explore clusters without having reapers chase you.

Also, I hated how Samara wasn't a real romance option in ME3 but they put Jessica Chobot in the game like the community asked for her.

Things I hated in the ME trilogy:

(1) Persisent attachment of action hero stereotypes to a character who should be mine to shape.

(2) A feel-good morality that promotes the ideology "follow your heart and everything will be ok".

(3) Shepard's limited intelligence.

(4) Excessive human-centrism

(5) Excessive Shepard-worship

(6) Militarism - political leaders are idiots (or worse), military leaders are competent.

(7) Drama over common sense, drama over consistency.

(8) Derailing characters in order to push the heroic sacrifice theme.

(9) Abomination aesthetics.

(10) Several aspects of ME3's ending, listed here, which resulted in feeling betrayed by the story.

(11) Disrespect for science beyond anything required for the plot or the world to work.

(12) The strong mystical vibe ME3 acquired as the story comes closer to its end.

(13) The asari.

I hope most of that stuff ends or reduces in the next game, Ieldra. Or for some of them (like 'asari') gains a certain interesting aspect/presentation/depth that really improves them.

Seems like I'm the only one who enjoyed being Space Jesus..

I feel like it was well done and it felt earned, maybe I just enjoy Hero stories

Why does everyone want to scrap it? It should have been improved on and better executed (barely anyone talks about it after Shep comes back from the dead)
I personally like the general idea of Shep dying and coming back, I just with we had more options to express Shep's state of mind

My main problem with it wasn't so much that Shepard was Space Jesus (some of my favorite games are the one's where I play such a character), just that it's so poorly justified. By ME3, Shepard's main attribute is his ability to dispose of Reaper and Cerberus mooks; a valuable skill to be sure, but hardly noteworthy. He doesn't do a lot of 'Commander'-ing -- that's left to other characters, he's a symbol because we have to be told he's a symbol, and he's more brawn than brains. For me, it's not hard to imagine a level 20 N7 doing the exact same job as Shepard.

It could work if Shepard himself was a stronger character or had some in universe reason to be more than human (like the Lazarus project gave him Deus Ex levels of upgrades). Ultimately, it strains disbelief because it feels like Shepard is so central to the universe because he's the player character, not because of anything the character of Shepard actual does.
