Who would you rather have in your party? Both are written well and are interesting in their own way. I personally enjoyed both characters very much but how about you?

Merrill, definitely. The loss of Marathari was a tragedy but at the very least, Merrill would never give an ancient elven superweapon to one of the First Magisters. Plus, she's simply just a nicer person, with purer motives and far less condescension than Solas.

I liked Merrill, mainly because she reminds me of Tali from Mass Effect. However, if I had to choose?
Solas. Don't like him, fine, but he's awsome. If he was real, the dude would be my best friend.

Obviously the one that doesn't give an ancient darkspawn madman a super magic ball of elven glory for who-the-frak-cares-why.
Plus, despite Solas' calm veneer, Merrill is more easygoing and lighthearted.

That's a tricky one. Merill was so sweet and vulnerable and unintentionally funny, but then her blood mage idiocy and refusal to listen to anyone was incredibly frustrating.
Solas was wise and hugely interesting, but after the reveals at the end of the first play (and his jerk behaviour as a romance in the second) I've come to really resent him for a lot of things.
So... neither? Probably Solas wins by default because being in a game I don't enjoy and probably won't ever play again makes Merill somewhat irrelevant.

I romanced Solas, and it always seems like I choose to romance the person in my party who turns out later to be skeevy. In DA2, I romanced Anders, so I'm 0 for 2.

Solas. Merrill currently hates me for not letting her fix the mirror. Lol Naw... I adore her, but Solas really stands out to me and because of who he really is, it makes me even more curious about him and his future role in DA. He's like the Loki of the DA world. Plus in all my PT's, he always protects and revives my party without me having to tell him. Love that bald, traitorous elf!

For personality reasons, Merrill. Solas is boring and annoying... and bald. And i actually really like Merrill.
For story/lore id take Solas. Given his "twist" he offers more potential on that front.
