It looks really fun and addicting, and I have considered getting it. But it's $70 here in Canada.... and it just doesn't look like a $70 game.

Isn't this the game that Nintendo was like, "Yeah, no vocal communication cause bullying is bad"
To be fair, Splatatatatatatatatatoon is supposedly a family friendly game. They didn't want to risk the kind of filth you get on Call of Duty pub games.

Is *insert term for Nintendo console owners* not above that kind of crass behavior?

Unlike Call of Duty and similar games where presumably everyone is 15-17 or older (even though the reality is different), there is a genuine mix of 10-11 year old kids being mixed with the adult users. Nintendo might want to cover all their bases, as pure bullying might not be the only negative thing the kids might be subjected to over voice chat. So I can understand where the concern is coming from.
In any case, Splatoon doesn't look like it's worth the full purchase price. So even if I had a Wii U, I'd stay away from it.
Worth noting though that someone stole the GAME delivery truck that contained all the Splatoon Special Edition copies for customers in the UK. Amiibo scalping is really being taken to the next level lol.

Amiibo scalping made me think of this. That is all.

To be perfectly fair, master races do tend to commit genocide.

Gamers in PvP environments are prone to outbursts, regardless of age or platform. So I wouldn't count on it. The other aspect is that this is one of the few multiplayer shooters not rated M.

To me personally, the problem isn't so much that Splatoon doesn't have voice chat. I've never had a pleasant experience communicating with randoms on any platform or game, both through voice and text chat. So I wouldn't be using that anyway.
Nah, the problem is that the Wii U itself doesn't even have party chat. Invite based parties pretty much do away with the whole bullying angle, so Nintendo can't excuse themselves there aside from it being just another way that they're functionally 10 years behind the competition.
There are other ways of coordinating in game at least (you can leap to a friendlies location upon respawn for example). Having not played the beta I'll just have to hope that's enough,

It isn't, certainly not at that price.
That said, I appreciate Nintendo for being transparent about what's included. The Splatoon direct showed exactly what content there'll be in the game at launch, as well as what's coming later and when abouts its on the way.
If only more games were that straight talking with their PR...
Anyway, to anyone interested I'd at least suggest shopping around. Your standard launch price definitely isn't worth it, but £25 (about $38 for context) like it has been in places just might be.

Should be familiar to people who have gone through the single player campaign.

They're doing a sound job adding stuff thus far. Honestly the low number of maps I've barely even noticed, so them adding more so quickly is just gravy.
Though there are a few levels in sp that are obviously upcoming mp maps. Its a strange way of doing it when they're seemingly fully playable.
