I am new to the Bioware forums and figured this should go in the "suggestions" forum, but since I cannot start a new post there I have decided to put it here. This is somewhat inspired by this post - http://forum.bioware.com/topic/554679-giant-alien-life-thresher-maws-need-company. I also hope to see more alien wildlife in future installments, especially if there will be a greater emphasis on exploration. I thought I would share some of my favorite bizarre and interesting animals from real life and hopefully if anyone from Bioware sees this it may provide some inspiration.

Sarcastic Fringehead

These aggressive fish have some very cool faces - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRV961d0TP4 (Jump to 2:08 in the video for the best part)

Goblin Shark

This shark has an elongated, flattened snout, and highly protrusible jaws. (Jump to 0:31 in the video for best part)

Bathypterois

Thylacosmilus

This animal was not a felid but a sparassodont, a group closely related to marsupials.

Mammals with Cool Faces

Hoplitomeryx on the left, Sivatherium middle, and Synthetoceras on right.

Teeth

Frilled shark on left and Thylacoleo right.

Whiskers & Barbels

I love the long whiskers of catfish and shrimp as well as other crustaceans.

Weird Features

It has always seemed to me that Bioware drew their inspiration for the alien life in mass effect from life on Earth. A few of the familiar alien species, in particular, seem to be inspired by some of the more intelligent species on Earth. Examples: Leviathans-inspired by Cephalopods, Elcor - elephants, Turians - birds/dinosaurs. The rest seem inspired by earth life in general: Krogan and Drell - reptiles, Hanar - Cnidarians, Salarians-amphibians. The Asari are kind of the odd one out, although their mode of reproduction is obviously based on parthenogenesis, again a variation of asexual reproduction on Earth.

I'd like a lot of 30 foot tall/long creatures mixed in with your typical 2 foot tall prey.

Funnily, the Asari are just inspired by women with wet hair slicked back. That was in the artbook or something. They just put it in an alien-like context.

Correct. It was in the "Art of Mass Effect" book. Also the first concepts of Liara make her look like this cold, no-nonsense assassin type of character, which I suppose would make her more suspect and less trustworthy, given her relation to Benezia, when you first encounter her. But I digress.

Another funny thing about influences on alien race design - supposedly the Krogan were developed with heavy references to weird faces of bats. So there is that too.

For really bizarre alien life possibilities, there is also the "Alien Planet" documentary developed and aired by the Discovery Channel in 2005 I think. Really, really interesting stuff and some of the concepts presented were downright creepy. I recommend anyone interested in this sort of stuff track it down.

EDIT: Correction - my original post said the "Alien Planet" documentary originally aired on Animal Planet. This is not true. The documentary ran on Discovery Channel. The due correction has been made to the original text.

As a hardcore pangolin fan I want to see something similar to this guy dragging along somewhere.

In some documentary thing I saw a concept for these floating gas-bag like creatures that could live in the layers of gas giants. I can't remember the name but I thought that was really nice. Quite alien, and quite unlike stuff we know, which is exactly what I'd hope to encounter in space. The gas bags on Eden Prime gave me a chuckle, reminded me of them.

I get that we draw inspiration from stuff we know here on Earth, and we're searching for similar planets to find life too (though, mostly planets that can have liquid water, not necessarily Earth-like ones) but it's also kinda limiting to think like that. Who knows if other chemical structures can support life in ways we don't know of. So yeah let imagination run and I hope we see some interesting lifeforms in the next game.

Lovely post OP, hadn't seen some of those creatures before :)
