Just what it sounds like.

A Castlevania kickstarter.

Protagonist with cursed crystal skin and also horns because why not.

bs3MKYT.png

Cheesy pitch video.

Thoughts:
I was never big on Castlevania really, so I'm not sure how integral to the franchise this director Koji Igarashi was, which makes me a bit wary of the project. But it seems to have gotten quite a backing already. I'm sure bigger fans than me would be interested to know about this if they don't already, and maybe they can clear up the haze my ignorance and lack of research left behind.

That's all from me. Discuss.

Looks like it could be interesting. I really like the character design for it.

Might try pledging it before the end.

The music samples from the kickstarter page, because why not x2-

Michiru Yamane and Ippo Yamada. Castlevania and Megaman. That second one sounds pretty falcom to me, which is cool.

Of course there needs to be an 8-bit remix.

So all classic games are getting the Mighty No. 9 treatment.

But this one's protagonist is my waifu.

So yes.

Just like Beck and Yooka and/or Laylee.

Less Castlevania fans around here than I thought, huh?

Ah well.

Koji is the main guy

Anyway, I think this one looks very close to Order of Ecclesia in stylistic tone and so on, especially with the main character.

Shanoa-CastlevaniaOrder-of-Ecclesia-610x

The super dark hair and stuff like that anyway, I also posted the theme ost in the video game music thread somewhere although I don't know what when I did that again

I'm a pretty big Castlevania fan with Symphony of the Night (so not a superhardcore one from the action platforming days). I finally got Rondo of Blood for the first time and tried it out, it's pretty epic, lots of amazing music and so on, I think the only reason I don't know what to think about this game is that I can't imagine it's going to be super different from all the other Castlevanias ultimately... and considering most Castlevanias already borrow so much from each other.

Yeah that's kind of an issue with all of these clonestarters. I mean, it's kind of the point to bank on nostalgia and not be different from the source, but there probably ought to be some originality to make it more rounded still.

Sterling did an interview with Igarashi.

He seems like a well-informed guy with an interesting head on his should.

Honestly I think Castlevania is pretty brilliant all things considered (like almost top 10 games all time for me), Rondo of Blood and SOTN were pretty remarkable, and the DS Castlevanias are all pretty dang addicting.

For someone who hasn't played any of them or something any particular one provides a pretty good opportunity to step into the franchise.

I mean the "What is a man line.." is a pretty legendary at this point.

Even if it is a bunch of gibberish is certainly memorable.

I hope the Vita stretch goal will be reached though there's only 12 days left.. so it probably won't. I would love some more games for the Vita.

I liked Castlevania before it turned all anime.

I know some CV fans are mixed on the Castlevania Lords of Shadow trilogy but I thought they were good and reminded me more of the "classicvania" CV titles (although the final one was disappointing compared to the first due to the crappier level design and story, still a decent game though).

I'm not really interested in this game, the artstyle just doesn't look like it innovates the genre. I much like the look of Salt & Sanctuary compared to this (which draws inspiration from both Dark Souls and Castlevania).

Lords of Shadow was closer to that of a God War game mixed with some Shadow of the Colossus boss battles. As much as I like Shadow of Colossus I didn't like Edgyvania: Lords of Edgy

Going by the kickstarters I've followed, if they've reached 3 million already, then they should definitely be able to get another 500k in the final stretch.

Well, that's how I remember it, anyway.

For example- Mighty No. 9 (daily data).

Found out about this one fairly recently and I must say it made me incredibly happy from a longtime CV fan sort of standpoint. <3 Finding out they got Yamane involved made me far too happy for words cause her CV stuff has always been amazing imho.

I have my eye on it, for sure.

Yeah that's the deal with Castlevania was always kind of moving back and forth between anime and the gothic style with Ayame Kojima (artist for SOTN)

Ecclesia is really the last one to go gothic style, with both portrait of ruin and dawn of sorrow being firmly in the anime style camp.

I just think the gothic style was really unique, going to post some of her art here for nostalgic feels although I don't think she's a part of this kickstarter the style seems closer to it generally.

That's still a very manga/anime-like artsyle. For what it's worth.

And?

I just said it's less anime compared to like Portrait of Ruin for example.

You said "anime and gothic style". I'm just saying that's not really a meaningful demarcation, although I do agree the old style worked better for the series.

Well obviously it was a meaningful demarcation if you and at least a few other people find the "old style" (whatever you want to call it) better for the series. I think you are reading way too much into this, obviously Castlevania has a Manga/Anime origin in some capacity and thus is probably always moderately traceable to that.

At the same time if I said every Dragon Age, TW, all Black Isle/Obsidian game like this and every single similar game was all "Western CRPG style" (which is true in a sense) that might obsfuscate some differences no?

I think the most notable example is Maria from Rondo vs. Symphony

Rob-offart25.jpg

vs

500px-Maria_Renard-2.jpg

It might be worth asking how seriously the style itself impacts enjoyment of a game... I find it hard to say these aren't meaningfully different in concept though, despite both being Manga origins.

I'd prefer not to burn the thread down over semantics tbh.

I've been a fan of the Symphony of the Night style Castlvanias for a long time and I will probably want to get this as long as it isn't being made just to be another over the top excessively difficult game for those who seek punishment.
