What I don't understand is, they gave the Katari guard on hit to make him more viable, as well as more HP (I think right?) and then release a magic variant of the Katari, the Avvar, who suffers from almost the same problems the Katari had been since launch. I'll admit Avvar's got a lot more AoE damange and a few more useful defensive passives, but I still think he could benefit from the Katari treatment.

This I have to disagree with. I think the Avvar makes sense as a glass cannon. The Katari was worthless before because he doesn't have any spectacular skills DPS-wise, so giving him guard on hit actually gave him a purpose. The Avvar is plenty functional as is, you just have to play him more defensively. Besides, if they were to raise his defense, I have to worry that they would then nerf his DPS to compensate.

Maybe I'm just bad with him, but I don't have the best success with him. More than do able, was running it tonight on Perilous, but I had a virtuoso backing me up who'd I run back to when I lost my barrier/guard. When I was messing around with the Katari on Perilous, I never really had to worry and could stay alive just fine. Like I said, he does great AoE dps, but Katari hits like a truck, just usually on less targets. Every class is functional as it is right now if you play defensively or bring a decent support group. But if you compair Katari and Avvar, I wouldn't say Avvar vastly out DPS the Katari, but unless you keep the Frost smash buff (can't think of the name, Avvar's Mightly Blow basically after using a Frost move) and have chilled targets near you, I feel like Katari is a lot more sturdy. And frankly I'd take survivability over damage in Perilous, maybe lower difficulties I'd rather the damage. To each his own.

The problem is if they bring all the other classes up, we end up with power creep as what happened in ME3. Then we got cheap enemies added which were more frustrating than fun.

Given the choice between a few character nerfs or geth bombers/Cerb armoured dudes who ran really fast and did the stupid smash attack whose name I can't remember right now, I'd probably take a few nerfs in restrospect.

If the game ceases to become fun, just play some other game instead. That's probably the loudest message anyone can send.

Why don't they just add end-game Geth?

Everybody wins. Except us.

With all the despair demons in this weeks challenge, I think they already did.

Given the choice between them or W3, I'm going with W3.

why do that or a make new difficulty when you can just keep nerfing all the classes until perilous feels like a challenge again

They have been making the game alot more player friendly of late if anything.  T3 upgrades, dragon weapons, virtuoso, and the chest loot bonanza

I've played both the Avaar and the Katari for a rather long stint, and I played the Katari before and after the buff so its not new for me. The Avaar has way more survival tools at his disposal with the amount of frost things he can use, and he can be specced for raw damage or AoE Hilarity. With the buffs that were added you can juggle your various boosts as well, so you can theoretically have up to 50% damage resistance, guard and a massive damage boost at the same time. He also gets faster as you crit and doesn't have to worry about many CDs as the different elemental smashes aren't on the same CD, he also gets a built in Mighty Blow for his charge.

The Avaar is just far better thought out than the majority of the starter kit characters. It makes the MP feel far more tacked on when you look across the board at the three new classes as compared to the twelve old ones that have a rather large amount of dead weight in their trees.

Almost the entire right tree of the Avaar is dead weight lol * I still have to play around with avaars wrath though*

I just don't think some of the changes to classes most us want to see can be possible without a real update or if it's even possible at all haha nice why we see weekly server updates.

Rage does damage, gives you damage resistance/boost and can be specced for an instant bar of guard. If it had Warcry built in, he would break the game. Plus there's a passive that gives you damage resistance for being near chilled targets. I take the passives from it just because I like them too. I rush for Rage after filling out a few key elements in his combat tree.

I never said that there weren't other buffs.  All I meant was that the Katari buff that Electrica mentioned was just one buff.

As for the number of nerfs, the reason why I said 'however-many' was because I honestly don't know the exact number of nerfs.  All I know is that it seems like there were more nerfs than buff among the classes.

And here you go:

The fun thing about the Avaar is that you don't need to survive more than one arrow. He is a walking nuclear weapon.

He is like some of the other fine offensive classes like the Reaver, you can play along swimmingly for multiple waves and then you are dead instantly due to wrong hits at the wring time.  Your survivability also is in real trouble one you hit the last wave.  Super fun class to play, perhaps my favorite these days but classes that cannot effectively generate guard or barrier quickly seem to hit the wall on that last wave.  (Unless you are promoted up the hilt, have all the best gear or are an expert player.)

As for the original poster.  You simply can't 'just bring other classes up' to the powerful ones.  Power creep is what you end up with.  All classes are over powered, thus all enemies have to be buffed.  Also because classes are different you end up just transferring the AW problems to another class which now becomes the most over powered one.

Gentle nerfs and gentle buffs over time can reach a better equilibrium and after a few errors I think Mass Effect did this not too badly (up until the very end.)

Rage gives you a bar of guard, that's gone almost instantly between the fact that guard isn't super great still, and it takes the Avvar like 5 seconds to come out of the animation. If it also taunted, it would be the equivilent of simply impaling yourself with your own sword.

I find the 25% from being around a chilled target extremely situational, seeing how between you and 3 other people, nothing is going to be alive near you to give you the chill bonus. Sadly the most time it's useful is when you randomly get chilled yourself.

I will say, however, between Lady's Wrath and the fire jumpy thing (forget the name) you do get a lot of DoT out, which is funny if you go down and get instantly picked up due to HoK. However, the Katari still hits like a truck and even when losing your guard, when you put more back up, it's just that much less health you lose.

I guess it's just opinion/play style at this point. I respect that you're able to do well with him. I'm not saying I can't I just feel more comfortable on the Katari, than I do the Avvar. And I have to say, the Katari PuGs I play with generally die a lot less than the Avvars.
