I tried using the media tool and it kept wanting me to restart again and again.

Just let it download the ISO, mount the image and upgrade.
Well, while all my files and programs were kept.. I can't say the same for settings and compatibility.
Literally 80% of the older games that barely worked on 8.1 (Hidden & Dangerous 2, Planescape:Torment etc.) with a lot of tinkering, don't work anymore now.
Also, a lot of them are no longer stretched to my 16:9 screen, absolutely no idea why or how did W10 tinker with my graphics card settings. Apart from that, my old SQL server (used for modding Dragon Age: Origins and Silent Storm) is now completely fucked and incompatible.

I got this

but I'm not in the hurry or anything... I'll wait

Was it regional or something since I'm in Asia Pacific.. either way, I'll wait for the upgrade to come...
MS really screwed up on the media creation tool . You have to change your PC region and language to USA to get it to function. Downloading now as I write.. I do not want to wait for the official download thing to start.... So I am using the tool I found here...
https://www.microsof...nload/windows10
Australian MS site but the download is actually USA specific....Once region AND language were changed it started working

gasp.. you're right

did it have any problem when you change your region and language back?
edit: okay, premature excitement..

I'm going to try and install with USA settings... Then and only then if it's all working change back once windows is running.
There is a fix for "something happened" Usually referred to as a hammer..
But seriously this is a known issue ... They know about this issue.
Also be warned the new start menu has a built in limit of 512 items if you exceed that it vanishes.
That's an issue they are trying to fix.

That is odd, because I upgraded via the tool and had my standard localized settings (which aren't US of course) and it worked without a hitch.
Solid advice. I can't say anything about any bugs/glitches that are supposed to still be around in the finalized version as I haven't really tested Win10 down to the bones, but I'm looking at is good. And I suppose for everyone that's being sceptical, waiting for SP1 until upgrading is good advice, pending which stepstones might still be present in the current build.
But it does appear the good old good-bad-good-bad cycle continues.
This is a solid OS. A few hiccups over here and there but for such an extremely large piece of software it is expected
...
I'll think I'll wait a year, before upgrading those three PCs which are entitled to this. However, should Zoo Tycoon 2 (published by Microsoft) suddenly run on this (it doesn't run on - exclusively or inclusively - Windows 7 or 64 bit OSes or hardware having 4 GB ram or more). But I think I already know how MS intends to handle this: "Of course it runs on Win 10!
Yes sir! - Oh, but you do have to have the XBox version and run it in the XBox app
".
Did you people learn nothing from the Troy, the siege of Fort Pitt or Human Revolution's upgrade chip?
Still having a hard time knowing whether I should trust this "free" upgrade to Windows 10, I know the rule is skip every second Windows OS and with Windows 8 being as crap as it was would suggest that their next OS is the one to get, but then again they did skip 9 so I don't know how that effects the rule for Windows 10?
Also I do have to wonder why they are so eager to get everyone to upgrade they are handing it out for free.

They want to eliminate OS fragmentation so software developers can drop support for legacy versions and concentrate on Win10. Works great for Apple as well.
MS makes very little money from selling Windows to existing Windows-users. MS is changing their release-schedule to "Windows as a platform" because selling new versions every three years doesn't make sense anymore.

Microsoft ain't Greek, Small Pox hasn't been digitalized and I beat Namir without augs anyway.

I don't want the workaround - I just want the fully legit notification to upgrade ;(((

In that case, just wait. Microsoft is doing a staggered release, so sooner or later you'll get yours if you had reserved it.
