Windows 10 right now...

For real, though, I like it so far. A couple bugs, but nothing too major at the moment.

I reserved mine about a month ago, but it seems I can't get the update yet (according to the little app that you can access from the toolbar anyway). Is it because I'm in Canada?

Then again, it may be because my OS is the French version.

Well, assistance would be appreciated.

When I updated, it changed my resolution to 1024x768, when previously it was 1600x900.

And since this is a 17 inch laptop, it looks awful, and the System>Display>Advanced Display Settings don't let me go above 1024x768.

EDIT: Scratch that, just a driver issue. What I can tell at this awful res isn't bad though. Have to go through the settings for stuff to turn on and off when I'm done.

When I updated to 10 I noticed my sound decided to stop working, and that was a problem I had when my sound drivers weren't up-to-date. After I went and got the up-to-date driver I haven't had the issue re-occur yet.

What I'm saying is, update your video card/onboard video drivers?

I am now, yes it's the issue considering the driver is from 2006.

Funny enough my laptop sounds better too, can even get louder. Unfortunately it didn't solve that issue with the bass being considered a different speaker system.

But I can't get the Recycle Bin off the desktop.

*eye twitch*

It's a setting now. Neat.

And the color changer based on wallpapers is neat too.

I solved the slow boot times. But it was a roundabout solution that should not be necessary.

poweroptions.jpg

Just above the picture of the power button is a link that says show options that are not available, at this point those boxes down the bottom should open and check the first option..  That opens fast bootup and my boot time has gone from 50 seconds to 18... That's even faster then Windows 7 which takes 24 seconds..

What brand of laptop is 17 inch?

I have a 5 year old Compaq CQ 61  15 inch and it's gotten hard to read....

I wish I had known about that I could have ditched my desktop 19 inch screen for that... and ditched my machine.. Would such a laptop be able to play skyrim and watch dogs, and GTA V

Apparently I already had that on. Lucky me.

Nope, can play some games, but it's not really a gaming type.

It's a 2011 Dell N7110 Insperon.

17 inch laptops don't sell well btw, so repairing it is nigh impossible. Once something goes wrong that isn't a standard part for any computer, it's junk.

Tell me about it.

To clean the fan of my laptop which I might have to check one day  you have to undo screws on the bottom, 3 marked ones for the keyboard and pop that off, the front cover around the keyboard and then disconnect cables.   You then have to remove the mainboard and turn it over to get to the fan and unscrew that.  Fun job..  Very bad design.

I guess maybe HP / Compaq didn't think these machines would still be in use..

The whole "free Win 10" thing just seems awfully suspicious after watching Kingsman.

I have no complains.. so far I like what I see and I didn't get any bugs since yesterday. Hello, start taskbar, I haven't seen you in years and I miss you. Even a few weeks ago, this happens, thank you Apple, again.

There's a lot of things I could complain about Win 8/8.1 and so far... I effing love how I can use apps in windowed mode. FINALLY. Urgh...

Partially unrelated, but does anyone have any experience with running old Windows (in this case XP) on Virtual Machine on Windows 10?

Windows 10 killed compatibility like for 70% of my older games and applications, so I am wondering if they might run in VM version of XP.

I also know that Windows 7 had something like this from get-go, but this sadly isn't the case with W10.

I've never tried to run a virtual machine in any windows...  But I think you can do that.

After some issues with drivers I'm liking the upgrade. Will have to adjust a few minor things

I was an idiot and got a copy of 32 bit Windows 8 when I built my last computer, despite having more than 4G RAM. I assumed 32 bit was so outdated by now that an upgrade to Windows 10 would naturally be a move to a 64 bit OS.

Oh, how I was wrong. So after doing to automatic update (took me about a week to get),now I'm downloading the 64 it version and doing a manual install and hope I don't lose everything as I currently have it set up (not holding my breath).

Got it FINALLY. Once installed it looked ok. Took me forever to find the options to change the background and mess with the Metro/Start Menu interface.

So far it feels like Linux, were options aren't quite where they're supposed to be, and I keep wondering why the hell that one setting has been moved way over to that new grouping. Case in point, there are now two Personalization options, one in the Control Panel and one in the context menu popup. The one in the context menu popup has the background image setting (as well as the Metro UI toggle, unlike what the help I got online said) and the one in the Control panel has the Theme settings.

Still not Aero Glass options for the menu bar like Windows 7 though.

Yeah I am really going to miss the Aero options.  Loved those menu effects

Windows 10 install couldn't have been easier, pressed a button it restarted and installed the OS without any problems. Kept all my files and everything works like it did before. Kudos to Microsoft for making it so easy. Impressed with it so far, my system uses less memory and cpu power on the OS and it boots up faster aswell.

I wish I could say the same :/

I got it last weekend and I'm liking it so far.

Not sure if it's been mentioned in this thread, but I'd recommend going into settings>privacy and setting those up. Virtually all the tracking is turned on by default, and apps are allowed to access parts of your PC like microphone and camera.

I also have to say that the new Edge browser is a lot better than IE was. It's actually usable.
