More details from IGN, this time focusing on PC exclusivity.
  • Basically, after EU, there were a bunch of stuff they wanted in the sequel they believed they couldn't do on consoles right now; high-fidelity characters and environments, better-looking destruction, physically based rendering, and most important of all, procedurally generated maps.
  • The game runs on heavily-modified Unreal Engine 3.5. Apparently, the modifications were said to be so extensive that it was "unrecognisable," hence why they couldn't move to UE4.
  • PC exclusivity also allows them to optimize the UI for the platform.
  • The game will launch with no gamepad support, which will be added later.
  • According to IGN, XCOM: EU sold 2.6 million copies on Steam, but failed to make NPD charts on consoles. "It’s safe to speculate that console audiences didn’t flock to XCOM," IGN said.
  • Console versions are not completely ruled out in the future, but it is currently "impossible" for Firaxis to develop them simultaneously with the PC version with the features they want to include. They are not even currently discussing the possibility, so don't expect them any time soon.

I do feel for people who want to play XCOM on console, because it always sucks to lose out on a game because platforms, but I for one can't imagine playing the game without KBM.

I played Xcom first in console and then on PC when I built my new lap top.

Really the game was meant to be played on pc, all isometric and realtime strategy games are meant to be played on PC. As good as the console port of Xcom was, it's inferior to the pic version by virtue of the fact the control system and UI tends to devolve into a cluster **** when anyone attempts to bring strategy games to consoles.

Xcom got away with it because it was streamlined enough. If they're going to add more then a console version isn't going to happen, at least not now, and not a version comparable to that of the pic instalment.

It's the nature of the beast. The likes of Europa Universalis. Crusader Kings, Total War, Civilisation, Xcom and all of their ilk are only truly possible on a PC.

New IGN article detailing the modding features of XCOM 2.

The game is getting the full treatment with and Unreal Development Kit (UDK) and the editor the developers use to create content. As the developers say in the interview:

“People will see the gameplay source, all the scripting,” he promised. “This is the code that makes the game what the game is. Here's the editor and all the assets that went into this game.”

They even make mention of the Long War mod in the interview as well, and how they admire the talented modders and fans that can help extend the longevity of the game well past its release date. It is this plethora of tools and ease of access with Steam Workshop that makes me the most excited for the game. Long after the vanilla campaign is beaten, I can be assured that 'Long War 2.0 will be there to keep me company, with even more features and mechanics, and if I ever tire of the XCOM universe I can always turn to some intrepid modder's work to get a high tactical version of Halo, or Star Wars, or even Mass Effect. Just make sure you make the Rachi recruitable agents!

Oh, happy days. I was more or less done with XCOM EU/EW after I completed all 5 achievement-hunting squads, but I suspect XCOM 2 will last significantly longer, if the modding scene is even half as prolific as an average Bethesda game.

Battle for Middle-Earth and C&C 3 were good games. Okay, they were better on the PC but still playable on consoles.

And those are just RTSs. Turn-based strategy games work fine on consoles.

Been on vacation so I haven't really had time to stay current with the news, but here is the XCOM 2 E3 gameplay footage in case anyone missed it:

I'm loving the stealth mechanic in the demo, its awesome to finally be the one getting the drop on the enemy. Those Advent troopers in power armor at the end of the video are very reminiscent of the MEC troopers from Enemy Within, and the hacking mini-game breaks up the tactical combat with some cool risk vs. reward challenges.

Kind of a necro, but I have just seen an article detailing all the revealed aliens you will be encountering in XCOM 2 and the best news for me: the Chryssalid is back!

2909107-xcom+2_chryssalid_screenshot_01.

As noted in the article detailing it:

The dreaded Chryssalid returns to XCOM 2 with some slight changes to their attacks and tactics. Different from previous games, this vile creature's attacks are now all poisonous. What's more, any soldiers who perish from being poisoned will turn into cocoons, which upon hatching, will spawn three more Chryssalids in its place. To make matters worse, the Chryssalid can now burrow into the ground, further increasing their frustrating unpredictability.

Some of the other foes you will encounter that have spiked my interest are the Advent Mech MK II

2914010-xcom2_adventmechs.jpg

The Advent Mech Mk. II functions much like the MECs introduced in XCOM: Enemy Within. Durable and powerful, they don't use cover and instead focus on assaulting your troops by any means necessary. They can often be a nuisance to groups of soldiers due to the destructive power of the micro missile that they come equipped with.

I really want to play this game already. And with the full modding suite in this title I am looking forward to mods that will allow me to recruit these forces to my side or will allow me to play as our benevolent overlords and squash these cowardly terrorists

And they said modding support for ME1/2/3 was impossible because it used the Unreal Engine.

Honestly, this is great news. I am usually not one for turn based strategy but the new XCOM sucked even me into the genre. Really looking forward to the second one ... and the mods!

Yeah they were the bane of my squad as well haha.

I always liked the design of them though, and the new tactics they bring to the party in XCOM 2 really has me excited/terrified.

Enemy Within kinda helped with my fear/hate relationship with them.

It was a balm for my tortured nerves, when I finally could beat them into a bloody pulp with my mech power fists!

Chryssalid charge? Hahaha.... COUNTERCHARGE!

My favorite EW moment was the first time that I played that map.  I lost all but two of my squad (one of them had to be left behind because she was too far back to make it before the strike hit).  It was super tense.  So.  Good.  It loses something on replay, given that it's a map with set enemy locations, though.

My soul is still recovering from the blow that this game is likely not getting a console port.  I have a Surface and laptop that is, literally, taped together.  I don't think either will be able to support this game.  ;)  I'm going to have to figure something out because I'm not satisfied with the idea of just not playing this game.  XCOM is still one of my favorite 360 games.  And, outside of the Bioware and Bethesda games that are likely getting backward compatibility, is the only reason why I still even have my 360 at this point.  I just have to hope that XCOM: EW makes the cut because, otherwise, I'm keeping my 360 just for that!

Also, can we take a moment to appreciate the accents!?!  Hearing that Nigerian soldier speak with her accent made me so happy!

*shudder*

I actually lost a man on that mission in my LW campaign. Michael Brouwer, I think. It's been so long... but my team made personally sure he was put to rest, regardless of the incoming airstrike... before evacuating with a sole casualty. God damn Lids got through my Overwatch as I ran for the Skyranger hopelessly.

We're gonna murder them this time!

Gamescon XCOM 2 Strategic Overview Preview:

Things I am really excited about from that video:

• Scientists and Engineers as actual individuals that can be assigned to various tasks and research projects.

• The random nature of the research element to the game; i.e. The Proving Grounds.

• The World map, and how you maneuver around it. Really feels in-line with the guerrilla tactics that the new XCOM forces must employ.

• The fact that the aliens/Advent will actually improve their forces weapons and armor in response to the players' actions. And the fact that XCOM can attempt to disrupt such upgrades.

• CUSTOMIZATION! That soldier editor and weapon load-out/upgrade screen

Yup.

XCOM2 is a must-have on my list. I was in the Gamescom presentation and the strategic gameplay looks like it really adds to the gameplay and the impression of XCOM running on limited budget and personel.

I also had a quick giggle as I noticed a blink-amd-miss-it blip during the gameplay where another resistence cell in Germany left supplies that XCOM could use ... guess the name of that cell ;)

I wish Steam would hurry up and add XCOM 2 to the list of pre-orders.

But yeah, I really liked the flow of the new strategic overview. I would have to agree with how it was mentioned that its almost like your playing as the aliens this time around; with how you move about the world and disrupt the Advent's goals.

In watching the video a second time, I can't help but wonder if Firaxis wasn't inspired by the Long War mod. The mechanic that has the alien overlords improving the capabilities of even the low level grunts in response to XCOM's actions felt very similar to that fan made addition.

The devs have on several occasions mentioned how impressed they were with the Long War mod, some even saying it's the way the game should be played. Yeah, they definately did take some hints from the mod, though I'm not sure if they actually said anything specific regarding that.
