Any idea what could be the cause of some of my menu
selections being blurred.

As in creating an character/loading ME1 char the screen is obscure as in the colours are a bit wacky and
blurred , same happens in similiar menus that use similiar style.
To describe it more accurately it is like there would be dublicate menus below the actual menus.

Anyone?

On a side note, I have tried to trouble shoot this problem by going through my video settings one by one but none of them fixed the problem.

Also I am reinstalling currently as it seems I am one of those lucky ones who got the crash after surgery goodness...
( ntdll.dll error )

Will post soon here if the reinstall worked on either of the problems.

Bump:

Reinstall did not help on either of the problems.
Some of the menus are still blurry as in double vision and the game crashes afther the "surgery" when you are supposed to create your char.

The more serious crash details:

On a side note I noticed all of us have 8800 series Nvidia graphics cards.
There might be something there but not sure.
Goint try something out.

So far I have tried:
- Updated Nvidia graphics drivers
- Updated Sound drivers
- Updated to Vista SP2 ( 64bit )
- Other smaller Windows updates
- Set up windows to start with only the necessary programs.

Still no luck.

The error code that it gives is:
Exception Code: c0000005

Now this usually indicates that there is something wrong with the drivers / program that encountered the error / some other program running in the background.

Bump for a fix.

Trying now with Nvidia beta drivers 196.34 if they would help , but I doubt it as
the menus were still blurred.

I have the same issue as well.

I've been searching the internet for hours trying to find people with the same issues as you guys. I haven't had my game crash on me because I refuse to go further with the menu buttons doubling up, going green and just being unusable and non-viewable. That picture that was posted described exactly what I'm going through. Damn green buttons!

I'm trying the beta drivers now as well.

OS: Windows 7 Pro x64

CPU: Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33 GH

RAM: 4GB DDR2

GPHX: Nvidia 8800 GT

DirectX: 11

Beta drivers do not work either. Read in another post about using 191.07 drivers. Tried those, those don't work either. This is getting really annoying. This should be an easy fix unlike the Cerberus code problem.

I also tried the beta drivers , but no avail.

Bump and

The problem is most definetly within menu graphics therefore
I am going to try next:
- Uninstalling ME2
- Uninstalling AdobeAir and flash too ( not certain wether the menus use either of these but its possible )
- Reinstalling ME2
- Reinstalling AdobeAir and flash

Sounds a bit far fetched but as many modern games implement .swf or similiar elements to their menus it is a worth the shot.

On a side note I did also try to get ME2 work by forcing V-Sync on and forcing some other graphics options on but
they did not help either.

At this point I am pretty certain there is some sort of glitch between our graphics drivers and what ever graphics the ME2 menus utilize.

As the crash occurs while loading the character creation menus , that are without a doubt bugged as the main menus therefore causing an error and making the game crash and burn.

PS: An bioware reply and solution would be much appreciated as weekend is coming fast and I would like to spend it by playing ME2.

I also did some searching and read about the V-Sync and forcing it on might help some other issues. I tweaked that in the Control Panel to no avail.

I do have Adobe Acrobat installed and your mention about the .swf files is intriguing to say the least. Let us know what you come up. Maybe Adobe needs to be updated.

Also, I muddled my way through the character creation and imported my ME 1 save and got the intro movie going but closed the program because i was running it in 720p windowed mode (to test different options) and didn't want to spoil the goodness until the game is patched.

What seems odd about the menu bugs is that the text saying what specific menu you are in are HUGE and insanely bright green, like a TV menu. It makes me wonder if the menu text is supposed to be like that. When you compare the rest of the menu graphics, text and backgrounds, the huge, bright, green menu text in the corner doesn't fit with the rest of the menu.

Thanks for your input everyone. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

I am also experiencing this problem. Blurred menus and CTD after the surgery video.

OS: Win XP SP3 (32 bit)
CPU: Intel Core2 Duo 3.0 GHz
RAM: 3.5 GB
GPHX: NVidia GeForce 9600GT
DirectX 9.0c

Both DirectX(9.0c Mar2009 or later) and GPHX drivers(196.21) are up to date.

Edited to comply with correct problem reporting standard:

1.      Which Game Are You Playing
Mass Effect 2 - retail standard edition(physical disc from X zone, Czech Republic) with Terminus weapon and armor bonus items.
      MassEffect2.exe version 1.0

2.      System Details

a.      Configuration Utility | Summary Tab
Processor / Clock Speed / RAM - Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU     E6850  @ 3.00GHz  / 2999 MHz /  3,49 GB
Display
Adapter / VRAM / Driver Version (just saying "latest drivers" doesn't
help)   - NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT /  1,00 GB / 196.21
Sound Adapter / Driver Version - Realtek HD Audio output / 5.10.0.5449
b.     Configuration Utility | Platform Tab
Operating System (& service pack if applicable) - Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (5.1.2600)

Direct X Version DirectX 9.0c (Mar2009) or later
3.      Problem Details

b.     What? What is the nature problem that you’re seeing?
The game menus are blurred in the same way like in the screenshot in this thread. It seems like when an item is refreshed/redrawn, the old one is not removed, only overdrawn.
Also the game crashes during character creation.

c.      When? When does the problem occur? Every time you engage in a particular action or only
after so many hours of play?
The menu graphics issue occurs both in interface menus (from start screen Exras -> Configuration, Achievements etc.), in character creation menu - not in the Male/Female/Import, but in the later ones - setting difficulty, listing of stats of imported character (here it only affects the left side Name, class, Wrex status,... selections the right side that gives the actual values(John Sheppard, Soldier, level 47,..) seems unaffected) and in the in game menu (accesed by Esc).

The intro sequence plays well up to the second loading video. Both the videos and in engine sequences (walk to the bridge of the shot up Normandy) run well and smoothly up to the Lazarus project reviving Sheppard - the machine drops the bloody scalpel, the loading screen with hearth rate and blood pressure appears the loading finishes and the game crashes with error related to ntdll.dll .

d.     Where? Where does the problem occur? Is the problem localized to a particular planet or does
it occur everywhere?
Both problems occure always at the same place and same time. They are not affected by altering graphics settings or runing the game in a window.

Did the Wind 7 users try and download and install the DirectX update directly from windows? Win 7 shipped with several files missing.

Most of the reported issues with in game crashes seem to have the NTDLL.DLL as a common issue.

I have found a fix, atleast it fixed blurred menus for me.

Run the setup.exe located on the DVD as admin when installing the game. I also used the "express install" during installation(I didn't manually select which folder to install).

Fixed blur for:

OS: Vista 64bit

GPHX: Radeon 4800HD

CPU: Intel Q9950

Directx 10

RAM: 8GB

Update:
- reinstalling ME2 with adobe air did not have any results

After this I tried to install ME2 as administrator just in case if some of the 3rd party programs would not have installed correctly without this.

But as usual this had no effect on the problems.

I am really running out of ideas that could save my weekend.
So I am giving up for an moment as the probable solution won`t come to my way until some sort of patch etc. with my luck

BFBC2 Beta weekend it is then bah...

More to list what has not worked to help the problem:
- More windows updates
- Changing resolution and aspect ratios
- Creating firewall rules to allow all traffic for ME2
- Making all ME2 executables run in administration mode

Also tried forcing graphic options on and off meaning
- Forcing everything from Anisotropic filtering to V-Sync on and the other way around
- Also tried few combinations of forcing some on and some off

What I have made out of this so far?
Well the Exception code points out usually to driver problems.
But updating just about all drivers did not help,
It could also point out to memory leaks , dangling objects etc. ( in the program )
It could also point out to memory problems.

Summa summarum the problem could be just about anywhere , but by deductive reasoning I have come this far and I am just completely out of ideas.

Same problems. Should probably be noted my install didnt work from autorun and my game is running after following the manual install guide.

Extracting all the .rar files etc etc.

Now I get blurred menus on the char creation section and the game crashed during the load screen after the Lazarus cutscene.

nvidia 8800 GTX here.

It's not specifically the 8800 video cards. I'm having this exact same issue and I'm running a 9800 GT with 1GB of resident memory on it.

IMHO this will be difficult to solve. If you look at the specs of people having this problem, it happens on all supported OS, both Intel and AMD CPU and both radeon and Nvidia cards. Although it seems that most people having any issues have 8800/9600/9800 video cards. Does it mean that this is a video card issue, or only that most people own these cards... I don't know.

I also had that problem with a ATI HD4870.

I installed the newest drivers which came out on 27., installed Adobe Air and installed ME2 again over the old installation (I deactivated my Comodo Firewall through the Installation Process). It worked then.
