"Update your drivers" is a canned response to most Tier 1 level technical support issues. That's usually a sign that Bioware techs are still under the assumption that these are player-specific issues and not a bug in the game. Hopefully someone from Bioware will at least acknowledge that they're aware of this problem.

*sigh*

I said I was going to do this a few days ago, but held out in hopes of a possible hotfix or work-around. But the longer this goes on, the more irritated I've gotten. Honestly, this game launch seems to have been a complete disaster for PC owners. I'm probably the only person on Planet Earth to not own an XBox 360, so simply buying the console version isn't a viable (or at least cheap) option for me.

Now I DO realize that its only been 48 hours since the game's launch, but I finally gave up and not only uninstalled the game but also deleted the digital download from my EACore folder altogether. If at some point down the road Bioware/EA Games releases an updated version of the game, maybe I'll purchase it on DVD then. Hell, I waited until just last month to purchase the original ME...but it was the final "polished" version and had absolutely no issues. I may revisit ME2 in 2012 or so, but for now...good luck with this fiasco, everyone. :(

Problems so far:

Wouldnt install. - Fixed by manually installing but may have caused more issues?

Blurry menus - Attempted to fix by ; updating graphics drivers, changing graphics settings, running in windowed mode. None of which worked.

100% Crash after Surgery cutscene right at the start of the game - Attempted to fix using same methods as blurry menus. Downloading alternate copies of the .bik files for loading screens in case this was related to the single core lock up issue on the front page of the forum. Again no luck.

Currently I am downloading a client via EA Download Manager for a reinstall.

As previously mentioned I am using an nvidia 8800 GTX. My PC easily meets the recommended specs in all other areas. My OS is Windows XP.

If that doesnt work I am totally out of options.

Please someone find a way to fix this. I dont want to have to return this and get a 360 copy. I wont have my ME1 saves. Ruins the story for me which is the entire point of the game.

EDIT: Vigilant47's post has the exact steps to reproduce this crash and details all the blurry menu areas I have encountered so far.

I got my game to work.

I uninstalled the program, then ran the setup file from cd 1 "as administrator". I also used "express install" rather than custom install (only diff is it installed on my d: drive before). The menus are fine and I've created my character. I don't know if this is a fluke or what but it seems to work fine now.

Truly odd.

I went so far as actually formatting C: ( was about time though )
and clean installing win7 64-bit.

Then installed the essentials and installed ME2 and had high hopes for it to work.
But to my suprise BLAM still same problem.

After that I tried installing while disabling firewall did not work

And now I am going to do an install to an another Hard Drive alltogether.
Also will try disabling the Nvidia stereoscopic thing.

Still I doubt that it will work.

I got the same problem, but only I can't install my game using the installer that came on the disk. I had to manually extract all the rars and used the EA code tool to activate my manual installation. Because of my limited traffic/month downloading the whole game is not an option. I'd like to try if using the installer of someone who did get his game working could help. All I need is install.exe. Maybe someone could upload it somewhere... (if it's allowed by the copyright stuff, but it's just an installer -.-)

Well as I suspected:

- Installing ME2 completely other Hard drive did not work
- Nvidia Stereoscopic feature is disabled by default

On a side note I installed ME2 again as administrator.

So to sum up so far I have:

- Updated Nvidia graphics drivers
- Updated Sound drivers
- Updated to Vista SP2 ( 64bit )
- Other smaller Windows updates
- Set up windows to start with only the necessary programs.

Then:

- Uninstalling ME2
- Uninstalling AdobeAir and flash too ( not certain wether the menus use either of these but its possible )
- Reinstalling ME2
- Reinstalling AdobeAir and flash

After that:

- More windows updates
- Changing resolution and aspect ratios
- Creating firewall rules to allow all traffic for ME2
- Making all ME2 executables run in administration mode
- Forcing everything from Anisotropic filtering to V-Sync on and the other way around
- Also tried few combinations of forcing some on and some off
- Finally tried the nhancer 3rd party program to activate AA in ME2 but did not help

After Brainstorming:

- Format C: and clean install Win7-64bit
- Installing ME2 with firewall disabled
- Installing ME2 to an another hard drive in administrator mode

And still nothing.
I am completely dumbstruck by this, because there has never ever been an error in a game that would not have been fixed by clean reinstall of windows.
I have even fixed an unsolvable bluescreen crash that also were caused by graphics by clean install.

I am again fresh out of ideas an only solution that I can see now is an game patch that fixes the problem or an graphics driver update that solves the problem.

Either way neither of these won`t most likely be out until next month so yes I am feeling a bit
dissapointed.
Pre-ordering game and all and then this :?

Bump for justice. Come on bioware, I was supposed to be playing this two days ago. Didn't you learn anything from ME for pc? Why was this game shipped with the exact same disaster of an installer?

I tried both of those things earlier when I was experimenting with different ideas to get the game to work right. Neither the "run as admin" nor disabling the stereoscopic 3D drivers fixed anything. I also ran a registry repair program to fix any possible problems with the ntdll.dll file that some have said seems to be the root of the crash issue. That didn't work either. I'm afraid this game's code simply wasn't ready to go gold yet. Had it been given another month of programming/beta testing, maybe it would have shipped with far fewer bugs.

This is certainly a strange one indeed.

Looking at the screenshot provided by Cyze (which is a huge help in getting the point across) I wouldn't classify this as a blurred menu but rather a failure to redraw. (i know, symantics, but there is a difference) Which is why it's always important to post a screenshot whenever possible. Even if you have to get out your camera and take a picture of the screen.

You can see what I mean by looking at the redraw points when the menu options slide in, when they should fade out, they don't and hence leave behind a ghosted image of themselves.

I'm sure you've all tried these and I'm really sorry for beating a dead horse. I can't imagine how frustrated you all are when you constantly have to redo things over and over again and things still dont work - but it's important to do things properly and be consistent across multiple platforms in order to properly diagnose and correct any problem.

If you've tweaked anything in the Nvidia control panel, rest them to default.

Run the configuration again and leave it at the default.

If/when you update your Nvidia drivers, or any drivers for that matter, do make a point of uninstalling them first. It's not always necessary but it is always the best option. Also try DriveSweeper  to make sure you've cleared out any files left behind before you !reboot! then reinstall the driver.  This is key. You really should reboot after uninstalling major drivers in order to best trouble shoot any conflict or corrupted installations. When you boot back into windows let it install the WDDM's then overwrite them with your latest downloaded drivers. Then reboot again before you try the game.

If you're feeling adventurous you can also try a beta version of your driver or 18x version (they seem to be the best - personally 185 worked very well for me for quite some time) Also, check the manufacturers website (ASUS, BFG, MSI etc etc) for supported drivers. Even if they aren't the latest, they can often leave the card more stable than the latest Nvidia driver.

The 8800 model was a very good model but definitely prone to problems. It was the last gen ddr2 and a lot of them were touted as factory overclocked with pushed cores and prone to crashes and overheating. Not to suggest this is the case for anyone here - just throwing that in there.

like I said, I know a lot of you have tried these already but do make sure you do them properly in order to maintain a consistent level of trouble shooting for everyone else.

Now, having said all that - I will say that this bug in particular - of all the other graphical bugs I've read - I'd say this one is probably 90% not a graphics card issue. So I'll be crossing my fingers for everyone who is experiencing it.

Good news!

Seems the error is something to do with either the disks or having to manually install from them because of a fault that occurs during installation.

Having downloaded the client from the EA Download Manager the game now runs fine.

BUMP

This is ridiculous. We can't search the forums for God knows whatever reason to see if anyone else is having this same issue. BioWare has not responded. What the hell is going on?

I paid good money for this game to work when I installed it. I've never had any kind of issues like this before.

Respond please BioWare.

I'm half tempted to start up Dragon Age: Origins, install that and play that for the first time, but I'm worried I'm going to encounter the same garbage there.

Respond BioWare.

Say something.

A good post low8all.

Will be trying with those older drivers but I doubt they will work.

I will also try redownloading the whole ME2 from Ea-Store just in case it has been somehow

corrupted.

I am having the same issues. I just ran into a strange bug. I chose a female character and went through the usual intro stuff up until you talk to joker. In the past I had always chose to be nice to him. Since I figured it was SURE to crash I was a jerk. Joker didn't get through with his sentence. Then the screen froze on a picture of the standard male Shepard facing away looking at stars. Then the game crashed. Wacky!

I'm getting really tired of playing the same 10 minutes of intro over and over and over trying to sort this out. I bought this game for BOTH PC and 360 but I really wanted to play with the better graphics on my PC but I have sunk like 4 @#%$ing hours into chasing this down. It just doesn't make sense.

Yes it does. I have a retail version.

You get the EA DL Manager and register your copy of the game by entering your CD Key. I  used the one on the back of my manual. It recognises you have a legal copy of the game and allows you to download a copy of it.
