NV gave you a pretty basic one, at least until Lonesome Road

Your being the Courier was pretty central to the plot. It gave you ties to each of the major factions, and was constantly a feature in the MQ. I'm not saying it's a deep background but I don't think it's fair to say you had a blank slate.

The only forced thing in the dlc is you delivered a package earlier and had a preferred courier route. That's really it. Nowhere near as bad as forced family.

I'm not saying it's the same. Hence why I objected to there being a family from the start. I'm just saying a background isn't intrinsically bad (cf. BG1).

im not saying its a blank slate, its just that when i hear "background" i imagine something more like DAO instead of "you are a courier and you got shot in the head",

That's fair, though I think given the state of the world in FO being a courier is actually something that excluded a lot of background headcanon, like being a prisoner in TES.

You also have to build a background fort he courier. If you don't of course it will look bland. That was how the courier was made. Some loved it, some didn't mind, and some prefer the forced shenanigans Bethesda did in FO3.

I hope they get rid of the reputation system. Or atleast make it abit more show don't tell. I hated having it in the pipboy. Rather have factions recognizing me for what i have done and not stuff i can metagame. Make it way more dynamic.

Indeed, I liked how you could shape your feelings in regards to creating the Divide, more or less building your backstory behind your reasoning.

And Courier destroyed the lone Wander because of agency and the freedom of how you could create their backstory. Yes FO3 had a strong prologue, it also had an extremely weak cast, story and poor agency. NV had a weak prologue, it shined everywhere else.

When do you get to create the Courier's backstory? To me, that was one of the most glaring omissions in FO:NV - I'm playing this person who has apparently been working in the general area for a while, but I seem to know nothing about the conflict over the dam, who the major players in the different factions are, or what they want. The only time I get any reference to my past is when I can say I saw somebody's musical act before and the stuff with Ulysses in the Lonesome Road DLC.

It's notso  formal.

I just built my character's personality purely through ability points and skills. And a name. The only thing about the Courier story was it kind of reminded me of that crazy paperboy from Better Off Dead.

The airship is stupid as hell.

Regardless, it's either scavenged or the NCR can build sleek looking, high tech aerial fortress that would make S.H.I.E.L.D weep with envy while the people still live in what appear to be shacks built from spare parts and ruins or there is another organization out there advanced enough to build something like that and we never heard of them (the Institute?)

Is it possible that the airship scene was part of the pre-war flashback? I didn't get a close look at the background.

I think the main problem started with Lonesome Road , suddenly you had a past and you were a courier for a long time.

In the main game , you very rarely talk about your past as a courier if I remember correctly.

It could have been a job you've only done for a couple of months for whatever reasons.

You could do that?Oh my...

Anyway I'm not sure Bethesda would go this way , I haven't played FO3 , but in Skyrim , well it felt like sex wasn't actually a thing .

Fallout was a bit less...tame...before Bethesda started making the games.

I don't get what the big deal is. Clearly the trailer showed the main character is a dog - how much relevant background could there be?

Mmm, one thing I do hope Beth fixes aside from allHouse has mentioned cause we're on the same page so far is karma. Cause holy hell was the karma system in 3 terrible. That's still something I haven't seen nodded to be made less bad. But you know, over here in the NV corner as far as "modern" FOs are concerned.

But we'll just say my hype is fairly nonexistent right now. They're again going down a path I'm not liking and if I do get it, it'll be a good while after. Especially so modders can do the usual fix what
Beth broke sort of clean up.

As far as the features in this trailer, I can go either way on the voiced protagonist - usually I like them but was OK with the way FO3 and FONV played without one. I do hope I get to pet the dog, though. (And train him to stay back when a giant radscorpion attacks instead of trying to kill it by biting it!)

I'd rather just be able to outfit the dog with guns. dog_with_a_gun.jpg

I think Beth can look over their writing problems by just making FO4 as fun and crazy as it can be.

Give me a gang who ride on Bicycles because they're afraid to Pollute the environment with further CO2 emissions. They fight with sticks, stones and bows against the evil industrialists called the Brotherhood of Steel.

Like Bethesda would ever do that.
