In the 2005 King Kong the movie tie-in game(a really good one at that) there's an interesting ammo management mechanic; instead of having a bar to display current/total ammo, you have your character(Jack) telling you how much ammo have left by pressing the reload button. If you have more than four magazines, Jack will say "It's okay, I have enough ammo."  If you have two magazines including the one in your weapon, Jack will say "One magazine on backup" and so on, right down to the number of bullets left on your last magazine.

I liked this mechanic, it fit the survival nature of the game quite well and was kinda unique, hope it catches on in more survival games. Is there any unique and interesting gameplay mechanics you would like to see implemented in more games?

Wing Commander III - Heart of the Tiger

Not much main story branching, but other characters reacted different.

Food requirement.

'Your level 98 master warrior has died due to not finding a mango.'

I like things like the paragon and renegade scores but I'd like them to be hidden which i know some games do.

I prefer faction/approval scores, myself.

It's easy to be a saint when you get Saint Points for it. Let's see how many people are a saint when their LI disapproves or the people they are working for hate them for doing it. That's real life.

I have to agree that faction/approval is better than a binary saint vs jerk scale.

Although it helps if you can't just bribe your LI with insane amounts of gifts to counter any negative approval and to get them into bed on the first night at camp =P

Yup, no problem with them tracking any behavior scores, I like that but keep it hidden and only make things apparent by reactions after the fact.

I don't know... I know a lot of people who fell head over heels in love really quick. And who hopped in the sack really quick. Acting like either of those things is the end of the relationship is the problem - Bioware has engineered their romances to end with the sex scene, when in reality, that's where it really begins.

Haven't played Shadow of Mordor, but I hear only praise for this system.

->Communication system tied in with gameplay using mediums such as sound like in journey.

->Different domain of shoot mechanics like in splatoon

->Dialog system that contains more personality(dragon age 2/pillars)

I would like to see more games where you have the option of defecting to the other side in the main plot and continue the plot from the enemy side with new companions.

Far Cry 4 missed a perfect opportunity with this, letting you command the Royal Army after you spared Pagan Minh's life after he gave you the country.

Better use of high level AI. Particularly in RPGs with factional elements. The faction wars in Clear Sky are a small scale example but the system in Mount and Blade: Warband is a perfect starting point. Combine Mount and Blade's system with the Nemesis system in Shadows of Mordor and you have something with a lot of potential. Beyond that, you could have AIs focus on growth. Where towns build new functionalities through a happy populace, public works and simulationist economic systems that rely on supply and demand.

In general, I think RPGs could learn a lot from the Grand Strategy genre as a way to have genuine reactivity without having to special case every scenario or choice. Because Grand Strategies are the penultimate emergent narrative games. Forget Deus Ex, just look at CK II or Total War.

Mount and Blade is too large in scale and too lacking in content/gameplay variety to truly be a classic (without mods). But holy lord if someone can get that reactive sandbox formula right...

I don't know what your life is like but my social circle isn't made up of people who have radically different morals, and I don't work for an employer whose morals I find objectionable.
