It absolutely is. Watch that scene on YouTube.

I've seen the scene numerous times, and paid close attention to how quickly the tide changes after handily defeating Saren.

Beat him to pieces, then get dragged around like a toy, see him fly away and leave someone behind on Virmire.

You never hurt Saren, you just got on his nerves.

Then how did his health and shields go down so damn fast? Is he the only character in the game whose health bars are actually his nerve meter? Wouldn't that be indicated by something similar to Benezia's goofy "Power Level" during her boss battle?

Found this image. Too amusing not to post.

He was the biggest badass in the galaxy at that point.

LOL.

One thing's for sure - this problem isn't getting resolved so long as the general perception that more difficult combat equates to a more intelligent, mature, 'tactical' game (and hence the implication that the player themselves 'intelligent' and 'tactical' for completing it) is as strong as it is amoung the gaming community.

But this unfortunately is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

The bulk of the mass effect trilogy was all about blowing s**t up, stabbing people with Omni-tools, and shooting anything within your cone of vision.

If that's what you think, you've obviously not played the Mass Effect trilogy.

LOL.

It would seem like the player is assessing the crotch of that ragdoll and measuring it's... "Benezia's Power Level".

... Somebody is making a killin' out there....

I'm in favor of the villain getting a mid-game triumph over the protagonist so long as it better serves the story. I think if all RPGs were reduced to only the outcomes determined by gameplay, we might end up with some weaker stories as a result. Virmire would have been less interesting if Shepard curbstomped Saren and lost none of his squadmates.

Part of the problem for me was all the "You killed a damn Reaper Shepard" (even though he didn't really), and "You're a symbol" etc, etc power fantasy stuff. I like being a badass character, I just feel like they went a little ott at times. Every other person would go on about how special Shepard is, how the Reapers are so interested in him/her because s/he's so amazing and it actually got kind of immersion breaking. I did prefer ME1's angle of Shepard being a badass elite, yes, but not some kind of celebrity figure who people would happily hand the authority to decide what happens to their entire damn species for some reason.

That's a big part of the problem with the series as it went on, everything was an escalation from the previous accolades:

  • ME 1 Shepard gets to decide the fate of one of his/her squad mates and of the Citadel Council. Shepard only fights the avatar of a Reaper as the final boss.

  • ME 2 Shepard gets to decide the fate of his/her entire roster of squad mates, as well as the entire crew of the Normandy. Shepard fights a embryonic human Reaper on foot as the final boss.

  • ME 3 Shepard gets to decide the fate of his/her crew as well as the survival of 3 major species and (up to) 4 minor species. Shepard routinely engages in ground actions against full fledged Reapers with 2 scenarios literally involving him/her running on foot right up to a construct thousands of times his/her size. The trilogy ends with Shepard deciding the fate of the entire Milky Way galaxy and all the trillions of lives within it; a bonafide Space Jesus.

I have no problem with Shepard being an elite soldier, but he/she should have been kept grounded and his/her decisions have been kept 'local'. Sure help Tali and Legion, but having them and their relationship with Shepard tie into the fate of 2 space faring civilizations is way too over the top (IMO).

The ego stroking power fantasy issue has plagued almost every Bioware game I've played, which is almost every one since KoTOR.  The only exception being Jade Empire.

Spoiler

Revan wasn't to bad in KoTOR, but definitely had shades of the problem (Ironically, Obsidian-produced KoTOR 2 made Revan out to be much more messianic than s/he was in the original game, which continued in SWTOR).  Actually, I suppose Hawke was a nice break from the messianic trend, but not the best implemented.  Shepard and the Inquisitor have been the latest and worst in this trend of messianic characters.  I really hope Bioware drastically scales down the scope of the stories they're telling, that will make this easier.

Couldn't agree more. Unfortunately, the moment they do that we'll see people grabbing pitchforks screaming that the story is not "epic" enough. -_-

I really want to see a proper Jade Empire sequel.
