Am I the only one that actually runs almost all the time?

Use the sprint button from multiplayer, which is the search button in singleplayer. It's the left thumbstick on consoles.
For me search is V and mount gallop is SHIFT

I only use mounts in the Hissing Wastes... because getting from point A to point B takes a long time when walking. The map is kind of misleading with distances ![]()

You are not the only one OP, I forget I even have a mount most of the time.

Hmm, that's strange. What does shift do while unmounted?

Nothing. And I haven't changed any settings. Those were the binds by default.

Huh. Thanks for the info.

Mostly run like just about everyone else. But I take my steads out every now and then when I want to look royal =).

I tend to use 'walk mode' when the Inquisitor passes through the main hall at Skyhold or pops into the Herald's Rest just 'cos it looks more dignified than running (see also the Winter Palace) but otherwise s/he 'jogs' everywhere. Out in the field I'll only use a mount if I want to 'fast travel' to a specific spot on the map and want to avoid random encounters with outlaws and lurkers and bears (Oh my!) along the way or want to try going 'off piste' from the main map. However a mount is , as noted above, indispensable in the Hissing Wastes.

Mining, baby! Handy to have a whole lot of tier 2 rocks to turn in for schematics when you get to Bettyar.

I use horses very rarely also. No banter, no sonar, broader turning circle... but the main reason is why would you? They're barely any faster than jogging is.

I run. Always. I suck so much at riding that my mount generally gets stuck in every corner imaginable.

I always run. I'd rather spend longer time running across vast, open desert than missing out on fun banter and important items. Mounts just aren't interesting. They're slow and make me feel like I'm riding a segway, and they're a pain in the arse to use.
The game discourages the use of mounts.

How do I equip different mounts anyway? I have some weird Halla-like beast that I bought way back, but I still only have a horse showing up when I whistle.

Go to the stable. There's both a mount store and a change preferred mount there. You see your preferred mount actually in the stable.
Count me as another who only rides in the Hissing Wastes. I gallop everywhere there. I'm not sure about all the people saying it's barely faster than running - do you gallop? Because galloping always seems much faster than running to me.

I used mounts very briefly in my first playthrough and that was it. haven't even bothered doing the quest to unlock them in my other two yet, my mage even keeps dropping hints that I should when I go talk to Blackwall in Skyhold

Mounts are useless in this game because they are not fast enough. It's faster to go on foot running.

Do you not know how to make the mount sprint? A sprinting mount is far faster than the inquisitor on foot. Probably 4 times as fast.

Never use mounts as you can miss a lot of resources or hidden things along the way. Never use mounts in other games like Elder Scrolls for the same reason (well that and the terrain in good chunks of Elder Scrolls games makes horses not very viable as well).

My boyfriend refuses to use mounts because he hates horses. I use them as often as I can, personally.

Of course I know how to make the mount sprint.
Last time I played (4+ months ago) spriting on foot was faster than on horse.
4 times as fast? I think you are exaggerating "just a little".

No I'm not, but I don't know how to sprint on foot. Shift, which makes the mount sprint, does nothing. My inquisitor is just running everywhere at a nice leisurely pace. Not full on sprint, but faster than jogging.

Mounts are cushions.
"Oh, a cliff!"
*whistles*
"C'mere, horsey!"
