What's the controller like versus mouse and keyboard on PC for ME3MP, etc? I don't know if I have the space or cash to upgrade to a gaming PC but these seem like a decent compromise but I'm completely clueless about PC gaming so I would love to hear your opinions and input. Thanks.

Any alternatives would need to be:

A)Cheap-because well I'm broke and cheap.

B)Decently integrable with TV, etc.

C)Somewhat simplistic to install and operate. Well because I'm clueless and technologically impaired.

First of all, let me clear things up for you. Steam Machine (or Steam Box) is a line of pre-built PCs that began being manufactured and distributed by a number of vendors using a range of different design specifications outlined by Valve Corporation. All Steam Machines will have either the Steam client or SteamOS version installed on them. They are just like any other custom PC that can run Steam.

Mass Effect 3 in not available on Steam and does not officially have controller support. However you can still play Mass Effect 3 (PC) on a Steam Machine that is running Steam Client, Windows and EA's Origin.

Most of the games on PC have official support for the Xbox 360/One controller built into them, but unfortunately neither of the Mass Effect games on PC have controller support. However you can still use any controller to play them by using a third party software like Pinnacle Game Profiler, which allows you to play Mass Effect 3 (PC) and other games that do not officially support a controller. But Mouse/Keyboard is by far the best way to experience any kind of 1st or 3rd person shooter and once you get used to it you will not want to go back to playing them with a controller.

First, the Steam Machines listed on steampowered.com are all scheduled for release in November, so probably no one here has played on them yet.

Second, Steam Machines will run SteamOS. None of the Mass Effect games will run under SteamOS, although it's conceivable that the next series could.

If you want a PC that will run ME3MP easily and is simple to integrate with your living room setup, I'd suggest you look at the Asus RoG GR series, which will come with Windows 8 and can be upgraded to Windows 10 once that's officially released.

As far as controller support, the Xbox wired controller works natively in Windows, although, as already mentioned, you'll need a software layer to get the controller to work with ME3 (Biovar, pls).

Feel free to PM me, BTW, especially once this thread gets locked.

I have a phobia of that keyboard and mouse. It may feel too much like work.

Thanks Mark.

I can't see why they would lock it but you can't tell now days with the mods.

I don't believe they will be locked, but the controller will almost certainly not work under Windows from the start. The Asus RoG GR8S that they list looks to be identical to the Asus GR8, which comes with Windows 8.1, and the standard Steam Machine spec is all for hardware that works fine under Windows already. Factoring a copy of Windows in won't make them any cheaper, though.

There are almost certainly going to be ways to dual-boot Windows and SteamOS on the same machine, but right now I can't be certain, although I have the basic idea.
